Anywhere from 12-20% faster than gtx480, consumes less power than a gtx480, and quieter than an hd5870.

EDIT: Nvidia has implemented, for better or worse, power draw limiters like AMD did with cypress. Max power load under furmark is 226w, and average power load under gaming is 197w (vs. 223w with gtx480 when gaming). So basically it's 13% less power draw when gaming and 15-20% better performance at the same time.

Holy smokes batman! That 580 is flying... was faster than I thought it would be.
Its tradeing blows with the 5970, I was not expecting that... I thought the 5970 would be slightly faster than the 580.

I predict 5970 price drops soon.

W1z still uses Cat 10.7 driver results for the 5970. Those drivers are broken with crossfire. We'll have to wait til someone with up to date drivers reviews it compared to the 5970.

I thought there was some hullabaloo that TPU was not getting a 580 ?
Guess that was wrong ? :)
Smart move with the smart vrm's, this way no one tries burning down their house with 4-way sli, start furmark and walk away !

Trading blows with the 5970. Speaking of 5970s... they are slowly being taken off newegg...

Which might be why the review is early. W1z wasn't under NDA, maybe?

Edit: I meant to say more reputable 'review' since he didn't have the time apparantly to rebench with the latest drivers. Do some of you feel better now? :hmm:

I will wait for a review from a more reputible website.

I do kinda wonder why he's not using the latest 5970 ATI drivers though? Time reasons I guess...

Really? Your gonna discredit TechPowerUp?

I'll agree that the 10.7 choice is odd, but still - TechPowerUp is great.

Well, no one should really be buying an HD5970 anyway, it's just hopeless.
Crossfire HD5850 used to be faster, and now the HD6870 is out, it becomes even more irrelevant.
Some dual card results would be nice (like dual GTX460 1GB and HD6870, since those come in a bit to a lot under the $500 mark, and are both faster than a single GTX480).

It is a bit unfortunate that some of the results are based on older drivers (for both NV and ATI).
Maybe instead of giving (pretty useless) results like 1024x768, they could re-bench older cards with newer drivers instead.

TPU is reputable. The guy who runs TPU made GPU-Z, which all the other sites use.

I don't think this review is supposed to published. Notice it's not linked on the index page, and the fact that all the pages in the review are stamped with "preliminary".

...glad it's up either way. This card is looking pretty good, although the idle noise level is a little disappointing considering all the fanfare NV made about their new cooling solution. Overall it looks like a solid improvement over the GTX 480 in pretty much every respect.

All true. :)

My point was don't take this as an accurate comparison to a 5970. We have people thinking that it's as fast as a 5970, when I don't think it's going to end up that way.

I wouldn't question TPU as not being reputable. He just uses old results for the comparison charts. Most of the time, it's no big deal. 10.7 drivers were just broken for crossfire on many games. In this instance, the old numbers are giving us skewed results. (Or likely giving us skewed results, is a better way of phrasing it.)

That's a very good improvement over the 480 on average about 14%, i wish i could get one but $500 sounds a bit rich for me i guess i will have to stick with my 4870x2 :(

The throttling is done in drivers is it not? And not strictly on the hardware level.

The improved performance and decreased power consumption s quite impressive.

Almost as impressive is that the improvements match almost exactly the rumors we had before hand of ~15% faster for ~10% less power. I suppose no one is surprised then ;).

Nice that they managed to bring us what we all wanted with the gtx480 before I upgraded :D. Still though, waiting for Christmas time.

If Caymen is as good as this we will all be merely on our way to the holiday shops!

Damn. When will we have a single gpu that can run crysis at max settings?

Looks like a solid card, probably the card to own this gen.

nah, the throttling is done the same way AMD implemented it, overcurent and what not. The drivers merely enable or disable this feature. It protects against the "power virus" while ensuring that even if a game is borked the card won't down clock (likely handy for OC as well).

That being said, I'm not sure that this is to "protect" the card any more than it is to put the final nail in the coffin of furmark as a tool. AMD and Nvidia will not both throttle during high demand such as it rendering it moot. Helps keep crazy "Zomg this card eats power like the sun" FUD from spreading as well.

Makes one think though, the improvements in performance/watt are exceptional over the 480, yet the 5970 is still consuming less power...

It's a good improvement on the 480, lower power use and ~15% perf gains. Fermi done right.

Why did they add the current limiter? The new coolers should be able to handle 300W TDP load surely. Its artificially lowering the max TDP, to be in line with NV's claims of ~250W. Not cool and very sneaky like the AMD driver throttling in furmark awhile back. These stunts should not be accepted.

The 580 can already run Crysis at max settings in *most* resolutions. The question you are asking depends on the resolution of the game.

With better drivers, Crysis could be fairly playable at 2500x1600 max settings on the 580.

I don't see the harm. So long as it doesn't interfere with over clocking or games they can limit till the cows come home (and I don't even own cows so that might be a while).

Though Furmark was handy for easily checking stability as it would report artifacts. Crysis works as well but I actually have to pay attention.
