I found the GTX280 to be worth the price difference. I did a lot of research and took my time deciding what to buy and I decided that at 1920x1200 I would not be happy with just a 1GB 4870 but needed a bit more oomph for some games which the GTX280 provides. Thus allowing 4x or 8xAA in areas where the 4870 can only manage 2x or 4x with respectable framerates (no lower than 30).

I just bought an EVGA GTX 280 SC for $191 AR from buy.com. If it comes through, that's actually like $50 cheaper than the 1 GB 4870.

I live in Canada so can't get anywhere near that.

You do know that the 4870 handles 8X AA better, right? In fact, if you put both cards head to head, I believe the performance gap closes to non existant in many titles. So, if 8X AA is your thing, ATI is the way to go, IMO. But maybe nVidia improved 8X AA performance with 180.48, I don't know.

That's what I thought too.

They have due to the rel 180 drivers, but ATi still has better scaling when it comes to 8xAA performance. 16xCSAA can offset this but this all depends whether or not your a purist when it comes to this :p.

I always wondered why ATi's 8x FSAA is faster than nvidia's 8x FSAA considering that the latter have twice the ROP's. It could be a memory bug in nVidia's implementation, or weaker ROP's. Who knows...

Think of it this way. Would you notice the image difference between 4X AA and 8X AA and whatever different types of AA are there? I know I won't.

Btw. NCIX sale tomorrow. Wait for it before you make a decision.

Lol too late...the XFX 4870 1gb was $295 CAD so I ordered that...should be here at the end of the week...I'll post impressions once I get it. My biggest qualm about ATI cards has been their partners and hopefully that is somewhat fixed with XFX getting on board. I hope to god the 280 doesn't go for like $300 in the NCIX sale or I might have to return the 4870. :)

If you look around and I mean look around you can get a 4870 1 gb for about $200 you can't beat that. sure the GTX280 will give you 10 fps more in games but at the cost of more than $150 more. I have always been an nvidia guy, but Ati did a great job with their 4 series of cards. Their fast and affordable two of my favorite things when looking to buy a video card. And with the 9.1 beta drivers, they close the gap on the GTX280 even more. Go Ati you wouldn't regret it...

$200 in the US but here in Canada it's still close to $300 CAD. I just got an XFX 4870 1GB for $295 CAD...I'm happy enough. Do you know where to get the 9.1 beta drivers from?

"8.561.3 predates ".8" but includes the same fix as ".8" to deal with the BSOD using 4850 in Crossfire mode. 8.561.3 also introduced the CPU, multicore support for DX 10. Under the correct circumstances the performance increases are quite good.

Cat 9.1 will not likely see much of the performance boost in the hotfix. Perhaps 9.2 will.

Overall, I agree about the hotfix naming stuff mentioned above. In this case we did not wish to confuse people with multiple hotfixes , and we did want to get the multicore driver out....................and you know the rest. "

I tried that one but I was getting the flickering issues that other users are reporting.
