Have returned two different GTX260's for 2 different reasons and now my friend wants to get his rig together and play some games for god sake...!!

Store gave us around $550 back and they have the GTX 260 for $300 each. The 4870x2 is a different story they have to order it from the main branch and that will take about a week, but i have to give an advance on it and the cards total cost is about $610!!

Does he have a SLI ready mobo? PSU ? How much would a HD4870X2 cost ? What resolution does he play it? Most reviews I've seen put the gtx260 SLI in front or on par with the HD4870X2.

I would get the 4870x2. If the friend doesn't have an sli mobo then sli ends up being much more expensive as he would need a new mobo, too; if the friend DOES have an sli mobo and gets the 2x gtx 260 then he's forcing himself to get another sli mobo for his next build if he wants to keep his video cards (which should still be at or near the top of the single card performance heap in 18 mos).

yah, whats the size of the monitor, and what motherboard is he using

24" - 30" i'd say X2,
intel mobo - X2,
Nvidia sli board - 260s,
< 24" - 260s

If your friend has a SLI MB then get the GTX260, but it would be wise to get a partner with a step-up or trade-up option. Power consumption is about the same between both setups. Cost from what you said is only a $10 difference, which is nothing.

It's really comes down to MB your friend has and preference. Having already returned 2 GTX260's though I would recommend 4870x2.

If I were buying for myself today I'd opt for the 4870x2. It performs so well that it's forced nvidia to lower the prices of its new stuff.

Darn you're right, they perform so good they dropped the prices before they even came out :)

Either way looks good to me, pick whatever catches his eye.
