The problem I guess for AMD is that now, you'll have the R290X, R290, R285, R280X, R280, R270X, R270, R260X, R260, R250 and so forth all within the $100~$299 segment..

Or else they've lost the performance per $ metric which also happens to be their biggest selling point to their nVIDIA counterparts. Things might get worse with the GTX 960 in the works.

R7 260 and 250 are bellow $100, they will also have to EOL R270/X i believe and leave only GCN 1.1 and above at the $100> segment.
So they will have Hawaii (R9 290), Tonga(R9 285/X) and Bonaire (R7 260X) at $100 to $299

Edit: or Bonaire 260X will go bellow $100 and 270/x will feel the $100-150 mark. Perhaps a new small die will appear as well to replace the old 270.


Same with NVIDIA, they will have GTX970, GTX760(to be replaced by 960), GTX750Ti, GTX750 at $100 to $329.

No there aren't - I have a laptop that uses optimus and it has done a very good job of just working. My kids use it for all sorts of games and I haven't had to fiddle with it once, it just works. I even turned on the nvidia experience game optimization as I can't be bothered setting all the graphics up correctly and that just works too. It's AMD with all the driver problems and serious flaws.

Back on topic, if 970 only costs $330 and is already putting pressure on, then what happens when the 960 gets released?

do you also have a notebook with enduro, if so how did you come to that conclusion?

I've also just noticed that there appears to be some amount of variation in the reference cards. Look at the I/O shield in Anand's sample and compare it to Tech Report's. TR's sample has noticeably better airflow. I wonder if there will be variation in retail cards, or if Anand just has an earlier sample or something.

I wonder why most vendors aren't going for the 3xDP + 1xDVI + 1xHDMI setup though. Still sticking with the old I/O config.

its amazing how perfectly scalable Maxwell is. Nvidia can price a 1536 cuda core GTX 960 at $199 - $249. They could have GM204 SKUs with further disabled cuda cores though i don't know if that makes sense given TSMC 28nm is very mature and the yields must be solid and the die size is still a sizeable 400 sq mm.

if Nvidia has a 250 - 270 sq mm GM206 with a 192 bit memory bus and 1280 cores with that third gen color compression tech then AMD is screwed for atleast 6+ months. that chip will kick R9 285 around and run circles around it. Nvidia can price that chip at $149 - $199 with a 1024 cc sku at $149 and a fully enabled $199 sku. god knows how much Nvidia is going to toy around with AMD 😀

The 560 Ti was a fine overclocker, it was cheaper, and the point remains that it was a respin of a chip that released at $200 twenty months earlier. So, outside of the memo field of cheque made out by AMD, I have no idea where you're getting that it is a "nothing" that somehow put Nvidia in dire financial straits.

You clearly keep living in alternative reality. When 7850/7870 launched, 560Ti and 570 became irrelevant for 6 months stock or OC vs. OC.

I even specified in my posts that 560Ti OC only dreamed off catching a stock 580 while 7850 did it easily while after-market factory pre-overclocked 7850s traded blows with more expensive 570. I never compared 7850 OC to a stock 570. Also, the lack of VRAM made 560Ti/570 irrelevant for someone intending to keep the card for 2-3 years even though NV fans fought this notion. In hindsight 560Ti/570 were 'junk status' if you had forward vision because now you can't use them for anything really with VRAM bottlenecks. With AMD and NV now having 3-4GB cards in the $180-350 range with 280/280X/970/290, 680/770 2GB are next cards to become VRAM bottlenecked. At least you can still game on a 7850 / 7870 2GB OC today but those 560Ti 1GB/570 1.28GB are paperweights. You also focused entirely on the price and didn't even talk about power usage where Fermi got owned just as bad against GCN as 970 owns the 290.

7850 nearly matched a 570 while using 100W less power and having 2GB of VRAM, and overclocking ability to beat a 570 OC. And of course bitcoin mining that made 570 completely irrelevant for 6 months for anyone but the most devoted NV fan because the 7850 made $.

The point you keep missing is that 7770/7850/7870 utterly destroyed Fermi in features, performance, overclocking, VRAM per $ and multi-monitor features for 6 months straight but NV fans still waited and waited to not buy AMD. Why is that? 970/980 just launched and people are declaring the end of AMD unless they respond with an architecture of similar perf/watt in the next 6 months. AMD and NV have traded blows with NV having very poor architectures with GeForce 5 and 7 and AMD flopping with HD2000/3000 series. I wouldn't discount AMD just yet even though I think NV will win this next generation but AMD should be able to beat a 980 even if GM210 beats their 390X card.

AMD needs to start leaking their new chips today haha. The forecast is pretty dark and scary till there is hope on the horizon.

The 960 is said to be built of the 204 family as well and as long as it isn't excessively gimped it could really be another gut punch, I think that's the biggest story because 970 pricing puts the 960 at around $200-220, imagine if its just about 10-15% slower and packs 4GB and OCs to 1500MHz, which could close the gap even further, it could be a great chip, thus why they are "holding it back" to not cannibalize 970 sales from people who might think that's good enough to hold over till 16/20nm.

The 980 is not a cheap to produce card. The Titan cooler and that backplate aren't cost cutting components.

Great perf/W with these cards and good to see nVidia has decided to let consumers catch their breath price wise.

I would still think that it's cheaper to produce than a 290X with water cooling. But it's just a guess.

So didn't have time to check all the benches, how does a 980 max oc fare against a max oced 780? I can clock mine easily at around 1310(though rarely do as I mostly play mmos now), i would upgrade if it is around 25-30% faster.

If not at launch they'll probably follow soon enough and the 960 card may actually be powerful enough to utilize it instead of being a bullet point on a box that commands a premium. Seems like the 760s launched with 4GB variants very soon afterwards, but I may be mistaken. Of course depending on the actual premium it might be worth it to just go 970, but we'll see I guess.

last rumor is GM210 > 600 sq mm at still 28mm
it brings also half DP rate for insane GPGPU (must compete with intel)

Not worth it for you. A 1.3Ghz 780 is 30-40% faster than a stock 780 card so take all the scores online of a 780 and add 30%+ to them. 980 OC cannot beat that by 25-30%.

The only way for a 780 1.3Ghz owner to have a real upgrade is either get a 2nd 780 or sell 780 and buy dual 970s/980s.

Gigabyte 970 G1 Gaming is dual slot but has 3x DP + dual DVI + HDMI and it runs 15-20*C cooler than a reference 970/980; and at load it's quieter than both with 1329mhz Boost clocks. Slam dunk card.

The point you keep missing is that Nvidia lowered prices to compensate. So you have still failed to support how Nvidia selling the GTX 560 Ti at $199 was a financially losing proposition for them when the GF104 was released at $200 and had been selling for $120-150. Not being a 600 series doesn't mean it didn't exist. Your AMD bias does not rewrite history.

And power?

44W between 560 Ti and 7850 is not the 93W between 980 and non-throttled 290X.

Is that why up to now gaming on a battery with Optimus was a waste of time? Even despite Optimus being better than Enduro, up to now it was still broken. Looks like NV finally fixed it with Maxwell so I guess that problem didn't exist......
