I very much appreciate everyone's feedback and advice. It looks like my thread has even turned into quite the debate. :D

I've decided to keep the GTX 780 when it arrives.

Based on the information I've gathered here, I should be able to at least overclock it to reach stock-290x speeds and that's good enough for me. It also won't run as hot or as noisy as the reference 290x, which is great. And even when discussing the stock GTX 780, the 290x doesn't appear to have a very significant advantage at 1920x1080, the resolution I game at.

I also thought about the three free games I'm receiving -- all of which I had been eager to play and would've eventually purchased anyways -- as well as some of Nvidia's own benefits like superior PhysX performance and the recently released ShadowPlay, which I look forward to using a lot since I run a fairly large gaming-related YouTube channel and loved recording and sharing gameplay. G-Sync sounds very intriguing as well, although a new monitor certainly isn't at the top of my list right this second.

Thanks again for the input. I've learned a lot just reading through this thread, so it has been both a worrisome and educational experience. People seem to be fiercely defending both cards, and that tells me one thing: They're both great GPUs.

Bring on the 780! :)

This forum is not representative of real world opinion...

The October Steam survey is up, and Nvidia holds a 51% to 33% advantage.

The fact that half of this forum (or this forum's sock-puppet accounts) would recommend 290x over a 780 for a standard resolution just shows that AMD viral marketing is strong, or there is a strong bias.

Why would we here on Anandtech forum care what Steam survey says more than our own community? If the OP wanted the opinion of the Steam survey, he could have checked. He wanted this forums opinion. No one person's opinion, not yours or anyone else, matters more than the community as a whole. You need to get over people not seeing everything the same way as you do as being some sort of grand conspiracy.

Words to live by. I hope you eventually get there.
