Hey guys, I have a MSI Lightning GTX 580 that honestly (and im pretty certain it shouldnt be this way) has completely disappointed me, I am looking to try and sell it for some extra cash and a new card. Im hoping it may just be a fluke with my system or something because my friend that I just sold my old 550 TI is getting better frames and general performance out of it than I am with my 580, so if you guys have either any advice (or questions to help you give me advice) please let me know, ill be very thankful! from what I can understand I should get a new CPU / Ram for a bit more performance, but will it really make the difference im looking for?

Specs:

Mobo - Asus M5a97 r2.0
PSU - 750 Watt Ultra LSP
Ram - cant remember name, 1333mhz 8gigs (2x4gig)
CPU - AMD FX 6100 6core 3.30ghz
OS - Windows 7 ultimate

I still have my GTX570 and its still plays high-max setting on a lot of games at 1080p.
There are a few games were it doesn't cut it on higher setting but not enough to say its an outdated card. Its certinaly better than a GTX550 or GTX560.
I suspect drivers or perhaps you have a bad card

It could be that crappy power supply. The stats on their website show that it's really a 540 watt PSU (45A on the 12v rail), which should be sufficient for a 580... but you never know with such a dodgy unit.

Whether the LSP Ultra is causing the poor performance with your GPU or not, I suggest you replace it with a unit from a reputable brand (before it blows up and takes the rest of your system with it).

Also, you might want to try cleaning out your drivers with something like Driver Fusion and reinstalling the latest package from nvidia.

Your GTX 580 (especially the 3GB model) is still is kick-ass GPU. It blows 1 of my 2GB GTX 650 Ti BOOSTs out of the water.

I'd reformat and reinstall Windows (I know this can suck but it's good practice for you). Then tell us whether your friend's GTX 550 Ti (which is slower than a GTX 460 1GB) can even compare to your 580.

Yup, yup, solid advice above, I'm rocking the 580 and only on some of the newest games (Bioshock Infinite) or high demanding ones (Crysis 3) do I need to drop settings from pretty much max max at 1080p.

And when you say your friend is getting better fps on a 550 -- something is likely wrong with your setup. Either drivers are borked or your PSU cant keep up, tho 750W (if it really is 750) should be enough.

The GTX580 is 1/3 of a GTX780 Ti, just have that in mind when you say its a kick-ass beast.

No, 780Ti is 2x faster than 580 ~ HD7870, not 3x faster.

OP, reinstall windows, try the GPU in your friend's PC, download MSI Afterburner and make sure the GPU kicks in proper 3D clock speeds.

Can you also tell us in what game your friend's PC is outperforming your PC? Some games are extremely CPU limited (i.e., blizzard titles).
