GTX 680 and Dual 120hz monitors...

Quick question...

I am wondering if this is possible? I would rather have two 120hz monitors as I want to game with FPS's in 120hz and don't want two different monitors on my desk. To utilize 120hz, would I need my monitors (benq xl2420t) both tapped into display port? Are there any GTX 680's that have two display ports? Or does this need to be SLI'd....

I'm somewhat new to monitors and videocards.. so any feedback is welcome :)

Is there any reason you can't use the daul-link DVI-D connection on the benq xl2420t? That gets you 120hz, and the primary method that monitor is designed around, as it is a 3D Vision 2 monitor (minus the built in emitter).

Yep that's fine. All you seem to have to consider is you cannot run 3d vision1 with 2. :)
Besides you can surround all you want with 120 hz monitors.

That's what the display port is for.

Oh ok that's good news. I'm not interested in having 3D in both monitors hehe.. But 120hz in both off of one GPU is what I would like to have. What exactly is the difference between the Dual link DVI's and Display port??

A different looking connection, and Displayport can do a few extras, like carry sound and daisy chain (not that I've ever seen an implementation of this).

Like I said before the display port, which is probably the future supports extreme resolution. So right like the man says you can really only experience surround on that interface. :)

I won't dismiss any other setup ideas, but again, that's what the port is for. When you are running surround you got 3 screens that works like one and I suppose you see the idea of running those i a 5000+ something resoulution. That's it even for 3d.

Hope that made sence. :)

I have the Asus gtx 680 4gb with two BenqXl2420t's on it wired through the Dual link DVI-I and Dual link DVI-D. Both refresh rates are set to 120hz, but I get flickering and performance issues when running both monitors on my desktop. I have no idea how to correct this...

Should I be using a display port cable and daisy chain it?

You may need to do a clean install of the drivers. I have noticed that sometimes the higher idle clocks don't kick in unless you do a full reinstall of the drivers. If the clocks are not the issue, you may also have a bad cable.

One thing to check is that both DVI ports are Dual Link, and that both cables are Dual Link.

For 120hz @ 1920x1080 a regular DVI connection doesn't have enough bandwidth, you need DL-DVI specifically, the video card has to support DL-DVI on both ports (not all do) and you also need a DL-DVI cable which specifically has the extra pins wired up.

I couldn't find concrete info on the 680 and if both DVI ports are DL or not, start there and see if you can confirm your specific model of 680 has 2x DL-DVI, if it does, make sure your cables are both DL-DVI, if you take a look at the wiki on DVI you'll see which pins are wired in for each specific cable type so it's easy to visually check the cables.

You'll also want to specifically set the refresh rates on both monitors to 120hz in the advanced adaptor settings in the display propterties control panel, make sure to do it for both monitors. It might be worth checking your OSD for the monitors to see if you can confirm both are in 120hz mode correctly.
