Wow if nV pulls this off, it is going to take me at least an hour to go back and quote all the posts saying that AMD wont have any competition anymore, and nV is "dead", etc.

And again, nV PR deserves whatever $$ they get paid and more. Instead of talking about the AMD launch this week, this is now the top story.

6870 is a pretty boring lauch performance wise. Finally some news on high-end parts.
Yea man it's so boring when the new mainstream part matches the old flagship part. We don't know the prices yet but if the price has dropped to $200-$250 for Barts XT and it matches Cypress XT IMO that's pretty exciting no matter which side your on.

Thats why I said performance wise. What it is doing to prices is awesome.

And which mainstream part matches which flagship part?

Doesn't the GTX 460 TDP rise significantly when overclocked? Would opening the disabled areas make it come more in line with performance without consuming more power?

TDP's rise significantly for *any* (AMD or Nvidia) graphics card when the clocks are increased. But there are several big factors you didn't consider:

Compare the gtx465 to gtx470 on anandtech's original gtx465 review. Both are running at the same clock speeds and using the same GF100 chip, however the gtx470 is around 25% faster while only drawing 5% more power in games despite having more of the chip enabled.

The compare a gtx480 to gtx470. More chip enabled, 100mhz higher clock speeds. The gtx480 is around 20% faster while drawing around 15% more power in games.

Now look at the latest reviews for newer manufactured gtx480's - some are running 50mhz faster than standard gtx480's while simultaneously pulling less power than the initial gtx480's at stock speeds.

So, in a nutshell, and especially with binning parts, TDP will be reasonably contained when, not if, Nvidia releases the 384 shader gf104 part.

EDIT: Further hinting that a new card is imminent is given in the cnet article with the nvidia / AMD emails http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20020318-1.html:
"Further to our e-mail last night about the GeForce GTX 460 1GB/GTX 470 price adjustment, please rest assured that our price adjustments are in fact permanent. Any claims that our pricing update is temporary are patently false. The price adjustments we made are not temporary, and are reflective of an upcoming change in our product lineup."

ahhh, you're back
nice to see ya
It's nice to see you also. Did i go anywhere?

i am incredibly busy. i have barely time to post on my own forum most of the time. However, with a new launch coming and having to spend a 100 hour week devoted to benching the two new cards, there were a couple of topics that i was able to add important information not under NDA.

During a long benchmark, i am often able to sneak in a post here, like now. All the stock and O/C'd benching is done and i am running Furmark now.
:hmm:

It also gives me a chance to bounce a couple of ideas around here to see if they have validity. And i have been predicting Nvidia's response ever since there were rumors of HD 6000 series.

i have to say that my predictions have been spot on

(in shameless self-promotion that i was told never to do beginning with my mom at an early age) :p

IMO Nvidia is dropping prices IN anticipation of 6000s.....which means, they will most likely drop it even MORE once AMD cards are out.

:)

REAd lets get some sales in before 6000

NOTHING sounds good to me right now until I see what 6000s can do and how Nvidia adjust their prices (assuming AMD will give Nvidia run for the money).

It's all about patience....

We already know the new price (SEP) for GTX 460-1GB is $199
--expect many standard boards to sell in the $180s-$190s, and OC boards to sell for $209+.

$259 for GTX 470

Truly pathetic, el cheapo lowlife trick - clearly shows how low Nvidia has sunk...

Cheap cards are good man, nothing wrong with saving money.

Sure NV timed this exactly to the day, but it will only help to make the new 6 series Radeons even cheaper.

You can't steal too much thunder with a price drop when a new release is tomorrow.

Because they should want AMD to have a great launch? These companies are in business to make money for their shareholders, not to adhere to your personal ideals. Kinda like Richard Fuddy going back and forth on tesselation to whatever flavor currently favors AMD. They both do what they have to, to try and paint themselves in the best light.

If Nv did nothing to combat the HD 68xx launch then I would be concerned about them. But they are fighting back (price drops, new products likely on the way)

So lowering prices on your products to be more competitive is now a bad thing? Like Apple TV falling from $199 to $99 and MacBook Air now available at $999? How is having 2 competing products at lower prices not beneficial for consumers?

Where did Nvidia demo the 580? I must have missed it.

What do you mean? You missed the GTX580 Launch announcement yesterday?

JHH brought it out yesterday at a press conference to counter the upcoming HD6900 seriers, but then the white frame securing the black fan shroud accidentally fell off, revealing an empty PCB with no chip anywhere to be found.

So this morning they called an emergency meeting to lower GTX460/470 prices and remove the existence of the GTX 580 from their website.

I don't know about you guys but I would like some decent pc games to play. Console ports make upgrading hard to do. Where the hell is crysis 3?

So, now it's the GTX-460+? I guess the GTX-475 we've been hearing about almost since the release of the GTX-460 isn't happening?

The fully functioning GF100 aka: GTX-485, also a no go?

And we see the GTX-580. Looks a lot like a GTX-460x2 (spec wise) or possibly a GTX-495, which we also have been hearing about for quite some time, but apparently is also a no go?

The GF110 mega-chip is coming. At least it's from an official source that it is, even if it's not an official announcement. It should happen, I would think? The single chip perf. crown, it seems, is important to nVidia. AMD doesn't seem interested in building a 300W single chip solution. So, it's a target they can hit, like the GTX-480 was for them.

Guys, I'm pretty sure T2K was talking about the OP (potential product "leak" and/or PR stunt from NVIDIA) and not the lowering of prices. At least that's how I saw it...

If there really is a 580 in the works soon to be released, cool stuff. However, if there isn't such a product or there is but it's release date is over 6 months from now, then that is pretty pathetic of NVIDIA.

No, no.

In keeping with Nvidia's new tradition of working from a carpentry prototype up to production ready hardware, here is the GTX 580 as it is now in its infancy

Expect a hard launch in April 2011.
