It's impossible to say because it depends on the game and settings you use. If you are playing WoW or Shogun 2, you will be CPU limited by a lot, but also GPU limited compared to say a 980. If you are playing Crysis 3, you will also be CPU and GPU limited. If you are playing Torchlight 2 or Trine 2, well you get the picture. Overall, there is nothing better for gaming than R9 280/280X/290 in the $140-250 space, which means among your choices, you did pretty good.
For your next upgrade though, you should definitely consider a change to the Skylake platform or newer. Your Q9550 @ 3.4Ghz won't be good enough for next generation GPUs.
