First of all, you need a beefy power supply for GTX 480 SLI

Secondly, i hope you are deaf - in that case GTX 480 SLI should be fine. As for me, i just ran GTX 480 SLI for the *LAST* time. And each time i ran a benchmark, i just left the room.

Options for your upgrade would include GTX 580 (not a very much faster upgrade, but very quiet), GTX 590 or HD 6990 are more than 1.5x faster than your GTX 480 - but the dual-GPU cards cost over $700.

Why do you want to upgrade? What resolution do you run at?

If you want an upgrade now get the second 480 and be done with it. If you're used to one, a second won't make a new level of noise for you. The roar of the fans just blend together. :D

The only single cards faster are the 590 and 6990. The 580 is a bit faster but not enough you would even notice your upgrade short of it being quieter.

Two 480s in SLI will be faster than a 6990 or a 590 by a small margin and much faster than a 580. It will also only cost you a couple hundred vs $700 for one of the dual gpu cards.

If your intention is to spend $700 I would wait on the new 7XXX series and get one of them. Not the time to pony up for new high end gpus imo. Your 480 will get you about $200 selling it used. So still expect to pay $500 out of pocket for something like the 6990.

if you just want an upgrade that will wow you with new performance get a second 480 for now for a couple hundred and sell them both off and get one of the new 28nm cards when they arrive)

i wouldn't chance it. Especially if you ever plan to overclock. i have had my PC pull near 800W with two GTX 480s and i7-920 at 4GHz.

If you can handle the noise, it is the least expensive upgrade for max performance that you could make - unless you consider upgrading your PSU

i can't agree that adding a second one is not much noisier. i had no problem with one. Two GTX 480s is torture (for me).

While wattage is important the number of amps on your 12 volt rail(s) is very important. I'm running 2 GTX 460 1GB using a 700 watt PS. But I have 72 amps over 4 rails.

I'm running gtx 480 x 2 and an i7 at 4.2 Hz on a Seasonic 850 W M12D (2 rails rated 40 amps each). Works fine, does not crack 600 W on load, but the 480(s) are at stock clock and voltage.

wait... so the second 480gtx is your cheapest route.. however might require you to upgrade your psu.

Vs. getting 2 new cards after selling your current gpu... which is already marked down a lot.

Ummm... OP, get a new psu + 480GTX...
Sorry u wont get anything better at price / performance .. but u will introduce a lot more wattage under load, as well as heat.

Why upgrade from a 480 in the first place? That card is plenty fine for games out now at the rez.

when you have already one 480, its probably easier just to get the second one. But from a personal experience i would say, either keep the card you have and wait for Kepler, or sell it and get one 580/590, but do not have 2 cards... its awfully noisy and temp are high. Some people do not mind this, i know i do, just sold one of my 460s because of this. It is something the reviewers wont tell you, they will all go about how is the performance ballripping and breathtaking and all that, but the truth is, no amount of horsepower can make up for computer screaming like a turbine.
BTW if you look for other card cause of gaming, you do not really need that, one 480 is plenty. If you look for it for some CUDA stuff like i do, there is chance you would want to do something (browsing web) with your compy parallel to GPUs doing their stuff, in their case you wont probably wear headset like maybe you do during gaming, so you will hear that noise ...and it wont be pleasant

I don't know what you people are talking about. You can set your fan speed at any % you want. I can run my at 65% and its fine. Hell my 2 120x38mm fans are louder, ppppffffffffffff

Well, the upper 460 in my setup had under load cca 90 degrees C and the fan worked at 90/100 percent...not sure now, but it was terribly noisy and i would not want it to set up manually for lower speed obviously, as it was already hot.
Not saying this has to be the OPs case, as he can have better cooling on his card, or better board layout, not forcing him to have the cards close to each other like me, but i think he should be aware of this. Not to mention, he is talking about 480s, which are on another level compared to my 460s, when it comes to temps, power consumption and noise.
Long story short, i believe that SLI is BS, unless you build your rig with it in mind (big enough case, good board layout, powerful PSU, watercooling).
