I vaguely remember reading that nvidia says it was designed to consume that much power. I think it must be some sort of jedi mind trick...

I'm glad we have threads like this.

To be quite frank Keys, I am not. Threads like this get started when a product that is released is lacking in one form or another. I did not want to see this generation of nVidia products be as "bad" as they are. I wanted to see competion to not only bring prices down, but for both companies to make a better product. This generation from nVidia (6 months late) is really terrible. I had only really bought nVidia products until the 5XXX series was released by ATI, and I now have 2 5850's, one for each of my 2 machines. I was hoping that if nVidia really was going to release a spectacular product, that I could crossfire the 2 5850's in one machine and buy the new nVidia card for the other. It won't happen with this release.

keys, it appears that you should have put some sort of [/sarcasm] disclaimer at the end of your post.

A product that is 10-15% faster than the compeition is now "terrible". My my how that definition has changed over the years.

Nah I think compared to the 5870, the 480 being 10 to 15% faster, 6 months later, 25% more expensive, and having a 32% higher power consumption under load qualifies as terrible, regardless of era.

I think that the biggest problem is not the lateness/thermals, but rather the delta between expected and actual performance. a lot of people were waiting for fermi to come out to make a decision because from looking at the specs they expected a significantly greater jump in performance. I've read more posts starting with "...was waiting for fermi, bought 58x0 instead now..." than I have "...fermi is so much better than I expected, I'm buying two for sli!!!!" Only thing worse for fermi would have been pulling a 2900xt and being slower than the competition.

Just make sure you don't try and hook up a 3rd one... I think the video says it all :p

That's a good point. I think the delta between expected and actual performance, though, is a function of it being 6 months late. Every time Fermi was delayed I was thinking 'Well, they better have something up their sleeves.' Turns out Nvidia didn't, yet still are charging $100 more than the 5870 for their flagship.

Yeah? How does 6 months late matter once you buy it?

Not sure where you got the idea because X item is Y months late performance increases with each passing month. This has never been the case in the past.

Because they could have had near equal performance for less for the last 6 months?
When it's late and isn't significantly faster then it's bad because you've had a long period where you were waiting for a significant boost. It didn't happen, therefore you wasted 6 months waiting when you could have spent 6 months with an almost-as-fast product.

And in the US it's not even that bad.
In the UK a GTX470 costs MORE than an HD5870. The 470. More than the 5870.

You have to remember where you are posting Gen. Most of the people who claim the 480 is a disappointment were never going to seriously look at buying one anyway.

Again, if you are in the market as of April 12th, you werent waiting for anything. Why does everyone assume that people are always "waiting"?

My prediction is the ATi-fans will continue to try and discredit Fermi, but in the end it wont really matter.
