Yawn.

NV has "had" and GTX475 since the GTX460 launched.
Since launch, back in July, people have been talking and speculating about when a GTX475 might be launched. This article is quite probably the most meaningless one that has ever existed.
(Also it's been "just around the corner" for ages. Last time NV had a price drop on Fermi cards, we had threads like this: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2095827&highlight=gtx+475 where people thought a price drop might mean a new card (GTX 475) which never appeared.)

I'm not saying it will never come, but I'm saying this article is absolutely meaningless and it's not the first time these events have happened (speculation about a GTX475, a Fermi price drop).

So I take it closer to release of the GTX 475 some GTX 460's might be unlockable?

The new GF104 has eight Streaming multiprocessors (SM) while the old GF104 had seven. This could very easily be the same GF104 chip with one streaming multiprocessor disabled, as Nvidia simply didn’t need that more power back in July time when it launched Geforce GTX 460 cards. Now, since they might need some more power, they simply enabled the eight SM unit.

So, they could have done this back in July? Interesting.

if they do come out with an unlocked gf 104 then you should be able to flash the bios of a gtx 460 1gb to a gtx 475. Unfortunately, you could also brick your card doing that so make sure that you know how to blind flash if you do. Hmmm, I wonder if you could potentially flash a 768mb card...

Nvidia might up the memory to 1.5gb with gtx475 though, which would prevent a bios change. I don't think they will, though, because they need to move quickly and existing gtx460 boards as is should be compatible with the a 384 shader gf104, so no manufacturing changes or updates would need to be made.

How could they up the memory to 1.5GB? GF104 only has a 256-bit memory controller, doesn't it? The 768MB GTX460 has 192-bit. They would have to make a 384 shader, 192-bit memory bus card to have 1.5GB. And it would lose ROPs etc as well (IIRC).

1GB and 2GB is what we should see.

Have there ever been any fully enabled GF100 cards releases yet?

GF108 is fully enabled and GF106 is fully enabled as far as shaders/cores. It does have 1 64bit memory controller disabled I believe though.

I think happy medium and now Fud are the only two places/people I've seen this part mentioned. It would make sense to bring it out around now to fight Barts, though. I guess we'll see soon enough.

two likely reasons they have waited on the theoretical gtx 475:
1. too many gtx 470's in channel. This would make sense because gtx 470 would get extreme price pressure from gtx 475 and most likely move into the 200-225 space.
2. fab issues. Certainly possible though less likely now that they've been making them for a while. issue here is how many fully enabled gf 104 cards can they make? 5%? 50%?

It was probably both issues at first. However, now that 6xxx is finally coming out they will have the price pressure on gtx 470 anyway so #1 is not the factor that it was. Also, a fully enabled gf104 would be better-equipped to compete vs barts xt. Fab issues seem to have been mostly ironed out for both camps as well, so that should be less of an issue today than it was even 3-4 months ago.

I think that the real question is not "if" we see gtx 475 but "when". FUD is just capitalizing on the clear path forward for nvidia (until 28nm obviously).

Being GF104 (assuming that is correct), I wonder if the 475 label will mean that it will really be faster than a 470. I would think Nvidia would be happier selling the much smaller GF104 for equal or better performance.

that makes sense, but if they do call it a 475, its most likely going to perform better than a 470

There's no need for such tactics, you can hit max frequency on the 460 through overclocking alone so it's an entirely unnecessary risk.

You're right. My brain wasn't thinking properly.

Not if the 460 and 465 are any indication.

the 465 beats the 460 is some games at higher resolution, but I get what your saying, and I would agree....maybe it would trade blows with the 470??? win some and lose some...

Looks like Nvidia might be working overtime to get the gtx475 out to AIB's. Apoppin asked nvidia specifically to comment on the gtx460 price cuts, and Nvidia's response was "the price cuts are permanent and we do not comment on unreleased products."

http://alienbabeltech.com/abt/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=21969&start=50#p42269

Now why would Nvidia throw that last bit in there? Hahahaha! It's nice to see AMD pushing the market hard - it's been a long time since we've had a good price war and so many new cards coming out in such a short time span.

If this performs between a 470 and 480 it makes sense to wait on it until releases their cards. Right now the 460>5830, 470>5850, and 480>5870. There isnt a space for such a card. But there will be once AMD releases the 6000 series cards.

So would this card be approximately equal to a 5870? If the naming makes any kind of sense that is.

A quick check on Newegg had prices as such: 5970 $599, 5870 $339, 5850 $254, GTX 480 $449, GTX 470 $279, GTX 460 $159. Nvidia could definitely benefit from having something between the 470 and 480, the price gap is gigantic currently. Nvidia doesn't really have something that competes with the 5870 at current prices. The 480 is faster than the 5870, but it's not even remotely close to being $110 faster, more like $20 faster.
