OP I would look into what you can do in terms of mounting some 120mm fans into that case if it supports it.

At a minimum if you can get a 120mm taking in air at the front and another 120mm expelling air at the back that will help.

Try to get some decent high rpm fans that can push air since you will only be using two

Of course this will likely just offset fan speed from your card to the case fans But some airflow will help, the first fan I linked is really loud, the second not so much.

I doubt you have a defective card, if you are not experiencing lockups or issues with the card. These cards get hot is all and once they get hot, they get loud.

90% fan speed must be pretty obnoxious. My cards will go to about 75% fan under load and I find that too loud.

yes, 2x80mm isn't going to cut it with that rig. I used to go with the cheapie cases, but since I went to an antec 900 or 3 there's no going back for me. 3x120mm and 1x200mm? what's that you say, they also come with manual fan speed adjustment? yes, thank you.

As an aside, I cleaned out the dust filters on my Antec 902 and now my GTX480’s loaded fan speed is 67% (as opposed to 70%). Obviously the card is still loud, but every little bit helps I suppose.

Good job. Glad the OP inspired you to do some cleaning. Try changing the TIM, maybe you'll go down to 60-63%?

Wouldn't that raise the temps even more in his undercooled case?

OP I think you got good advice so far, particularly from Russian.

As a stopgap solution, try using headphones, manually setting fanspeeds, and underclocking/undervolting the GTX470 if you really can't return it for a more appropriate card.

Well, the case got here today. All I can say is wow, what a difference. Whereas before my best idle temperature was 51C, I'm looking at 43C with this new case. Played a few system-intensive games and the max temperature I hit was 74C. The noise is definitely not an issue any more for me. Thanks for the help guys.

What case did you go with ?

I just earlier this evening managed to find a good fan configuration in my 800D that would keep my GTX 480 cards at a reasonable temperature. Still pretty hot and loud, but better than before.

At that time I/others told him it was his case airflow.
Overclocking your cpu dosen't add that much to ambient temp anyhow.
It added a whole 3c to my case.

You have an Antec 1200. You could build a camp fire inside it and only increase the ambient temp by a few degrees.
