A 40 amp rail should easily handle a highly overclock i7 and gtx 470.
How old is your psu?

Edit: Never mind you don't have enough cpu for a high end card anyway.

To be honest , I dont need all that power, I'm looking for something around Gtx 285 performance with direct x 11. Or possibly a overclocked 5830 (with future crossfire) if they ever come down to 175$ where they belong.

36 amps is fine with your system but not with a overclocked i7 or core 2 quad.

Toyota is the King of the Bottleneck. If he seen you running a 5870 with a 2.4 ghz Phenom II...........well lets see what he would say.

And yes if your system can run a 5870 it will run a 470. I'm sure your psu can handle an extra 3 or 4 amps, especially with that low powered cpu (95 watts?) with no overclock.

i have a 460w psu tht my 4870 runs fine en i cud easily upgrade to 5850/5870. And summers here make me scared to get gtx cards. Thats why i gt a dark knight instead of a reference card. And i stil get ova 70c on th core at 100%. So dnt expect everyones conditions to b th same, dnt generalize

I will give you benefit of the doubt that some of your keys are acting up.

However if you think you can use a 5850 or 5870 safely I really suggest you read some power consumption reviews and a little bit of information about PSUs.

If you run your PSU at too high of a wattage you are simply asking for trouble no matter who made your PSU.

A little overclocking wouldn't hurt.

CPU really has a small impact, especially once you are in the i5+ range of CPUs but the impact is still there.

It is generally more noticeable for minimum framerate changes than averages and then only when you are hitting some high settings.

In certain games however your CPU is going to play a bigger role.

I find in BFBC2 @ 5760x1200 I do have a noticeable impact on minimum frames when a lot is going moving my i7 920 from 2.8 to 3.4. I suspect that if I still have some CPU bottlenecking then it must also exist for you.

The issue at hand is diminishing returns. Is it really worth it for you to upgrade your CPU to play the games you would like to play? I would look at the games you enjoy and try to find a CPU scaling article that covers some of them to see.

I was using my mobile phone when I posted that.
Anyway, the 5870 might be pushing it, but the 5850 will be fine as reviews show it uses less power than a 4870.

Well, I am planing on overclocking when I get myself a new CPU cooler.

I read a lot of reviews before buying this system. thats why I got a quad instead of highly clocked dualie. I play alot of UE3 games, dragon age, source games, EGO engine games (grid, dirt)

Beware of overclocking with a high end gpu and that psu buddy.

Should be just fine with a 5850 but I'd be leary of anything more. A 470 would definitely be "pushing your luck"--it may run fine...for a while...but I sure wouldn't risk it. I'd be careful overclocking the GPU much, but you should be okay to OC your cpu, just don't go too nuts with voltage.

Back on topic, very interesting driver updates. Makes me wonder if I should have gotten a fermi after all. I got a 5870 from XFX instead.

It seems that since I ordered the ATI card, many more examples of good fermi performance and great OC results have come up. They will still use more power than a 5970 though.

I guess my XFX purchase is still a good decision, since it is the xxx version, and I can still OC it too. Plus, I can add another one later with a beefier PSU.

Anyways, free performance upgrades like this are good for everyone. Hopefully it will help push the 5870 price back down now that the fermi cards are looking better.

I Don't plan on OCing the GPU, just the CPU.

Interesting review. For most gamers 1600X900 or 1920X1080 are where they are playing. It appears the nvidia cards do quite well at those resolutions.
