EVGA GTX460 FTW.

Once you get to checkout, put this promo code in: EMCZZYR24

Alternatively, you can grab a cheaper GTX460 1GB by MSI Hawk/Cyclone or Gigabyte and overclock them yourself. Also, HD6870 is an excellent choice at this price level.

From reading posts it seems 6870s do not have as good compatibility with alot of newer games. Is that right? They also run hotter than 460s?

The PNY XLR8 Overclocked is $179.99 with the 10% promo code. I would generally choose EVGA over all other brands, but PNY is a good brand as well and they offer Lifetime Warranties on their GTX models, and you don't have to fool around with a rebate.

Free shipping as well.

Newegg has their warranty info messed up btw, just zoom in on the box and you'll see the Lifetime Warranty listed. It's on their site too.

They run a little bit hotter than 460s, but still easily within acceptable limits (not like a GTX480). HD6800 series is largely based on HD5xxx series. AMD has sold at least 25 million HD5000 series cards. As a result, you can be rest assured that HD6800 series will have great driver support and compatibility in modern/newer games.

Both are great options. A stock GTX460 1GB will be about 15-20% slower than a stock HD6870. This is why I recommended the FTW edition by EVGA since it's about as fast as a stock HD6870. Of course if you are comfortable with overclocking yourself, feel free to get an HD6850 / GTX460 1GB in stock form. On the AMD size, Visiontek and XFX have limited lifetime warranties, while on the NV side it's EVGA and Zotac. PNY has a tricky lifetime warranty since the warranty runs out once the cards are no longer produced. So unlike EVGA, it's not a true lifetime warranty.

according to this the EVGA FTW GTX 460 only have a 2 year warranty because their part number ends in -TR

That's correct. EVGA has significantly reduced its lifetime warranty on a number of their products.

I would suggest the Gigabyte GTX 460 1GB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125333

I love the dual-fan cooling setup and the out of pocket price ($171 + $ shipping = $173 - $10 rebate). All GTX 460s are highly overclockable and you likely will reach 800 mhz without any issue whatsoever.

That's not true for the XLR8 models sold after September 09. They have a "lifetime of the purchaser" warranty with registration at their website just like EVGA's "AR" models. That's why I bought a PNY GTX 460 1GB reference model. I couldn't get that type at EVGA with anything more than a two year.

If the PNY card is not an XLR8 model it has their old crappy "lifetime of the product" warranty.

Good to hear as I have that card on the way as well. I didn't think I read their warranty wrong, but some manufacturers do such things as mentioned. Their GTS 450 I noticed has a 5 year warranty listed which is nice too.

The have the BFG RMA program going, so maybe they are trying to pick up where BFG left off. And since they have been around for quite some time hopefully will not suffer the same fate as BFG after adopting this more comprehensive warranty.

I picked up the Evga FTW w/Lifetime warranty at the Egg for $219.99 a few days after the 6870's came out. The 2yr warranty version was $10 cheaper.

EVGA does not have FTW version with a lifetime warranty listed. Both of their models end in -TR, which is just 2 years.

Are you sure about the lifetime warranty?

Will my mobo accept a 2.1 pcie 6870?
what is the diff between 2.0 and 2.1?
Yes. 2.1 is backward compatible with 2.0.

Okay I think I'm down to this decision

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814133326

$40 diff for the 6870 - probably worth it in the long run?
If you have the money to spend, and the room in your case, and don't want to worry with overclocking, then the VisisonTek 6870 would be a good choice. Not that you can't overclock the 6870 if you decide to, of course. Just you will need to further overclock that 460 to get to within the 6870 performance.

Plus, if you are planning on owning this card for a while and not playing the upgrade game on a yearly basis (which I imagine is why the Lifetime Warranty is imortant to you)...then yes, spending a little more now is always worth it.
