GTX 460 prices take a nose dive at Newegg

Now you can buy one instead of making a thousand threads about it!

A 768MB version would make a great Physx card? Thinking of one for 30-60 day primary use then as a Physx card.

LOL pwnage!!

did you edit his message? I mean I would consider a 1GB GTX460 for $169 to be "pwnage"...

although I suppose the LOL is suspect but perhaps he's laughing out of jubilation?

Your post is a thread-derail and is not appropriate.

If you have a moderator-related question then you either pm the mod or you make a thread in the Moderator Discussions sub-forum.

a little overkill for physx. the gts450 would normally be the better option IMO but unless prices dropped on it too then the gtx460 768mb would be around the same price.

I noticed the same thing at newegg. You can buy a o/c custom cooler gtx 460 for 215-199.99 and some have EXTRA rebates.
Anyone can see by Anands review how a gtx 460 competes with the new AMD cards @850mhz. Why Nvidia launched them the way they did ? Think thats obvious. As obvious as not ignoring they have more gaming power than 675mhz fps scores.
Good time to buy a video card. Should increase the noise for more/better dx11 games to play.

Power consumption and heat/noise production can drastically shoot up with overclocking and especially with overvolting.

By setting a relatively low standard that was still very competitive with parts at the time nVidia gave the option to overclock to the end user and AIB partners and avoided any eye catching red flags in reviews.

Its basically the same reason why AMD didn't clock the 5870 at 950MHz or higher even though just about all of them can pretty easily hit 1GHz with a slight bump in voltage, power consumption just really goes through the roof with slight adjustments.

Yes, it's a balancing act with performance/power/heat/cost. The GTX-460 is a far better balanced design than the original Fermis. The 470/480 number one goal was to be faster than the 5850/70. Accomplishing that threw the balance off and it used too much power and made too much heat to do it. The 460 just needed to beat the 5830. Much easier to do.

Also, they didn't want to cannibalize 470 sales. The 460 running & 850MHz makes the 470 redundant.

Don't we already have a discussion on NV price drops? An entire thread for it. Yet Happy Medium makes a new thread, and the problem people are those saying that having a million threads is bad...?

I would suggest merging this thread into the existing thread on NV price drops, or it could go to Hot Deals. (Not trying to tell you how to do your job, just wondering why this thread exists at all).

In light of the existence of this post in this thread and the moderator message it contains, you still went ahead anyways and elected to neglect that information and proceed head-first into more thread-derail rather than pm'ing the mod or opening a moderator discussions thread? 😕

What part of this isn't a mod-challenge Lonyo? It is very much a mod-challenge Lonyo, but it comes on top of a moderator statement already present in this thread that such actions are specifically not acceptable in here...and yet you did it anyway?

Since you guys seem a little daft about the rules and really want to have yourselves held up for public spectacle, here you go:

(1) The two infracted posts above were clear and present thread-craps. Their infractions are merited regardless the merit for the existence of the thread itself.

(2) The thread exists because of the results of this poll. The part where the community said "we want it to be at the moderator's discretion" also includes accepting and NOT PUBLICLY CHALLENGING the results of the moderator's discretion.

(3) Your post is a thread-derail and a public mod-challenge, as was/is bunnyfubbles. You both are long-term members here who simply have no excuse for not knowing the rules and no excuse for not knowing how and when your actions constitute violations of those rules.

Discussions regarding moderation, be it a request for some, be it a request to explain and clarify some, be it a request to have some changed, are NEVER handled publicly unless initiated/solicited by the moderator (as was the case in the mod-sponsored community poll).

This is a forum-wide rule, not just VC&G. I really shouldn't need to be explaining this.

The request to send pm or use the moderator discussions forum is already present in bunnyfubbles post. Any more discussion on what "moderator discretion" means or what constitutes a "mod-challenge" needs to be handled through the proper non-public channels.

There will be no more public discussion on this. Any further thread-derailing by publicly discussing the justification for infractions or the justification for the thread's existence will be met with infractions.

I'm very excited to see these price drops. We haven't really had a competitive situation like this since the GTX 275/HD 4890 market and even those didn't dip much below $200 for quite some time. A closer pairing in this price range would have been the GTX 260/HD 4870. Its about time the consumer had some choices in a strong card a decent amount below $200 again. I'm kind of leery of ECS, but the Black Edition model GTX 460 1GB with the Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo for $199 ($179 after rebate) looks nice. Too bad I already bought a GTX 460 a month ago before the drop in price. At that time I really didn't believe they'd come down this much.

With all the hints in the last week, coupled with AMD in the zone with new releases, I'm most excited that these price drops finally clear the way for the first fully unlocked Fermi card (gf108 doesn't count in my book). Lets see what a 384 shader gf104 card can do stacked up against AMD's assault!

I dont see advantages of 460 1G and 470, consider they perform similar to 6850 and 6870, have similar price, while draws more power, and has only two display output.

Now 460 768MB is in a different position, its quite attractive at $150. It would be a great time to buy it. AMD suggested that nVidia will reverse the price after 3 weeks.

1. they are a little cheaper.
2. they are indeed a little more power hungry
3. there are already deals on them making them a lot cheaper.
4. neither the 6800 series nor the GTX460 can drive more than 2 monitors (of gameplay) at any reasonable performance level.

its pretty much a wash. AMD came up with a great product, nvidia simply cut prices so much that its not a wash in which to choose

1. no, 470 is $260@newegg (cheapest), 6870 is $240; 460 1G is $180 AR, 6850 is $188

2. no, its not a little, 460 1G is 30% more power hungry than 6850, while 470 almost double (310) the power draw than 6870 (160) .

3. I searched for cheapest price on newegg. I am not sure what other deal you were talking about.

4. Well, thats FUD. I played DAO on 3 display eyefinity beautifully with 5770, its not like everybody is playing certain games that are extremely demanding. There are literally countless games, how can you possibly argue that statement?

So it just comes down to whether you believe the 470's performance lead is worth the extra power and heat right? Can you overclock the 6870 to give it better performance than the 470?
