Even the cheaper 768mb 460 is faster than the 5830 and can be had for less than $200.

gtx 460 1gb and overvolt and overclock it to gtx 470 levels.

well i am more of a quiet pc type of person, so id like to keep it as stock as possible, maybe slightly overclock it but keep it as quiet as possible.

you'd still consider getting the gtx460 1gb over the 5830 ?

Yes, even overclocked they are quiet. Thats actually an easy question.

There is one brand thats loud ,I think it was Zotac.

Edit:yes it was Zotac, stay away from that one.

Would the EVGA 1GB overclocked to 768Mhz for $250 a good deal? (it has rear exhaust as well)
they have limited lifetime warranty, and the noneclocked version is $240
which is 10 bucks less. Or should i go elsewhere ?

Wreckage and Happy Medium are not objective sources, although their shilling is actually right for once because the 5830 was overpriced even in ATi's price gouged lineup.

Given the current pricing scheme, both the 768MB and 1GB model 460 GTX's give good price/performance, especially given their SLI scaling.
The 5830 should really be ~$15 below the 768MB 460GTX, but it's not.
The 5850 really should be back at its launch price at @$259, or maybe $249. But it's at $280.
That leaves the 460GTX as the champ.

gtx 460 1gb without question. 5830 is a turd in red clothing.

msrp is $229 on the gtx 460, I wouldn't pay more than that for one. stock cooling is totally fine on them. you could get one and go for a mild oc (say 750-800), which you would most likely get on stock voltages.

Depends upon your current (and whatever potentially future) motherboard might be, the games you are interested in, and your resolution.

The best bang is an HD 4870 1GB for $120-$140.

Edit: I fergit ...

We are on the cusp of a price war so you may want to wait ---- but you might miss out on something like the 4870s.

I would wait as well to buy at least a week or two to let the market establish itself.

GTX 460 uses less power, generates less heat and noise, and both models are faster than the 5830. If I were replacing my 4870 this week and was looking in the ~$200 price range it's what I'd buy.

The 5830 is like the GTX 465, made from rejected chips that failed to work as a 5850/70.

5770, 5850, 5870 are all good gaming cards, the 5830 less so.

Hell, the MSRP was supposed to $199 for the 5850 and $299 for the 5870 right before launch. Boy, the market just didn't let that actually happen. These 460's are a year late.

Yea, right now, GTX460 is the price/performance king. No question, if you buy today, get a GTX460.
You could wait and see how AMD responds though. If you can get a 5830 for less than a GTX460, then it's still a good buy.

The 5830 goes the way of the dodo and the 5850 and 5870 slide down in price. Dropping the price of the 5830 to the point that it would become commercially viable will compete with the 5770 and drive it's (and everything below it) price down. Better IMO to just let the 5830 go away, and reduce the pricing of two models (possibly 3 if the 5970's sales tank) rather than loose profit on the entire range of cards. Especially the lower and middle ranges, where I assume the bulk of the sales are and nVidia offers no competition.

GTX 460 with heavy OC can match up well to 5850... but if 5830 goes OC too i think it can match 5850's clocks...

You need to wait at least one more week before making this decision. The GTX 460 1GB cards are not completely out yet and there may be price drops from AMD in the next week or so to counter it.

Again most likely its going to be a GTX 460 but wait a week for clarification.

That was never true, that was just fanboy hopes and dreams based solely off of the 4800 pricing schemes, however when we consider die-sizes the 5800s vs. the 4800s, the 5850 @ $259 was actually very fair if not a bargain. Even the 5870 @ $379 was fair compared to the 4870 @ $299.

I have seen this mentioned several times on the forums. The brand has nothing to do with how loud the GTX460 is.

There are actually 2 distinct GTX460 coolers: TOP and EXHAUST blowing fans.

EVGA (top fan - quiet): http://www.evga.com/products/moreInf...s%20Family&sw=
EVGA (exhaust fan - loud): http://www.evga.com/products/moreInf...s%20Family&sw=

5830 only has 16 ROPs. It can't quite match 5850 at stock speeds. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/xfx-radeon-hd5830_6.html#sect1

GTX460 though can overclock past 5850/GTX470 (unless you overclock those too).

OP, I would consider the 1GB version of the GTX460. Down the line, you'll get to overclocking it anyway :)

edit: looks like newegg has several for ~ $229, I'd go for the evga if you can't find a better deal elsewhere.

yeah, that's a great deal...except that I got a gtx 260 for $145 16 months ago. If you're going to old tech anyway then just wait for SI or fermi II.

Of the available new gpus out today in the $200 or so price range the gtx 460 1gb rules the roost.

Doesn't look like eiher Zotac or EVGA offer a 1GB model with the middle (top) fan. Looking at newegg Galaxy, Gigabyte (2 fans), Palit, MSI, and Sparkle do though.

That's why I think the Gigabyte 1GB and MSI Cyclone are excellent options for those planning to overclock. The gigabyte also has upgraded PCB components I believe.
