GTX 460 or 470 from an 8800 GTS 640?

Now I did previously post asking if the 5850 would be a worthy upgrade from the 8800 GTS 640mb and the general consensus was yes. However, with the release of the GTX 460 I feel as if my options have changed. I'm was set on the GIGABYTE 1GB GTX 460 for $230, but then I spotted the MSI GTX 470 for $300. I'm not sure if I'm willing to spend $300 quite yet, but I was wondering if the $70 was worth it, especially at a 1680 x 1050 resolution. I don't consider SLI 460's an option, because i feel like i'd have to upgrade my PSU/mobo.

Current Specs:
8GB DDR2 RAM @ 800MHZ
Intel QX6700 (Core 2 Duo Quad Core Extreme @ 2.7GHZ)
Abit IP-90 SLI Mobo (neForce 650i chipset)
700W PSU (Some Thermaltake I got in 2008, probably not the best)
500GB 7200 RPM Seagate
nVidia 8800 GTS 640mb

I did just notice that Newegg has a weekend deal on the ATI 5850 bringing it down to $250/260, I'm wondering if that's the better deal, because it outperforms the GTX 460 and creeps up on the GTX 470.

A $250 HD5850 is the better choice IMO. Faster out-of-the-box and can OC very high too.

I was in the exact same boat. I was very close to getting a GTX 460 but all the 1 gb were sold out at the time. But then I ran across an EVGA gtx 470 with just cause 2 for 235. Of course this all with rebate and Bing cash back. But still a GTX 470 for that price is a no brainier for me. With BCB it took it down to 280, then with the 20 dollar rebate from evga, and the 25 dollar rebate from Bill me later at tigerdirect, not so bad imo.

But if you dont like rebates etc. a gtx 460 is a big upgrade from your current card.

I think an hd5850 @ $250 is the same value as a gtx460 1 gig @ $220.

The cheapest gtx470 on newegg is $299 and it also comes with a $20 MIR. $280 for a gtx470 on a pure performance standpoint is a great deal. Current drivers have added some serious legs to the GF100's performance and the gtx470 is constantly within, and sometimes equal to, an hd5870. If you're willing to live with the trade off of a potentially noisy card, then I'd go with that if you can afford it.

The 460 is the best bang for the buck. It overclocks very easily on stock cooling and it scales very well with overclocking. You will easily be able to clock it to GTX 470 speeds and beyond with much less power usage and heat.

Also nice to know if you do decide to upgrade the rest of your PC down the line (if your current can't handle SLI) you can easily invigorate your system with a second card and get ~30% faster than a GTX 480 for the same price or less.

I have a pair of the MSI Cyclone 1GB 460's in SLI. Even overclocked the temps on the GPUs stay in the 60s under load. The 460 is a sweet card and before this I would always just recommend an ATI but now nVidia is back in the "bang for your buck" game finally.

I would personally go with 460 GTX. Let me tell you why. You might get a 3dmark score you dont like with it but that doesn't matter 3dmark is not a game.

For todays games with your current card you can do 0AA 16AF 1600x900 easy on all games out. However there will be places frame rate drops to 40 or 35 , then jumps back up and that kinda messes up your mouse aim and game play. With a 460 I will not promise you you can play Crysis 2 or Crysis 3 engine at 1920x1200 4xAA all high settings. Soo this is what I was gonna say.

You pay 200 dollars and buy a 460 free shipping at amazon EVGA and then in 2 years or 3 years when Crysis engine 2 and 3 is out and stuff like that then you can choose to buy a high high end card with your saved money.... like a new 500GTX for example, not fact there will ever be such thing. For example a 490GTX dual core which will probably come out in nov dec "not sure when but it will come out" nVidia is showcasing it to all their partners. Anyhow...those are for the hard core gamers,,, that want 100fps all times any game, 1920 or higher all high settings. good luck But I can tell you, you will be happy cuz your current card is not bad either. good luck let us know what you decide.

For your system, I think the 460 might be a good way to go. Should be a good boost. I loved the 8800GTS 640mb. It was my first high end card.

As a previous poster said you can get a GTX470 at TigerDirect for ~$220 after BCB, rebates and coupons. There is a big thread on the deal a slickdeals. You can do a similar deal on a 5850 or save even more on a 460. I opt'ed for the 470 as it seemed to provide the most bang for the buck.

Well, I'll be odd man out and say 5850. It's been around for ~9mos., has been a rock solid performer, and @ $250.00 is worth the extra $20.00 over the 460 1Gb. While I think the 460 is an excellent card I wouldn't recommend a 470/480 to anyone. The original Fermi (GF100) is an abortion, IMO. The prices are falling like a rock and I believe nVidia will replace the 470 very, very, soon with a gf104 derivative.

Just recently got the 470 for $234. Very impressed so far. Temps and noise have not been an issue since manually setting the fan to run higher.

The GTX 460 or the 5850 are the only two cards worth considering. Why would you want a GTX 470 unless it's significantly cheaper? It offers the same performance as a 5850, but produces about another 80-100W of heat and is much louder. I think the GTX 460 is better suited for 1680x1050 and you'd be overbuying with the 5850.

I think I'm going to go with the GTX 460, and then I can use the saved money to help purchase my future mobo, CPU, RAM upgrade (damn new intel sockets and DDR3).

At $250, I would consider the 5850 over the GTX460. Don't forget the 5850 can overclock to 950/1000mhz which outperform the GTX460 OCed. Either way, both cards are more than sufficient for your resolution. In fact, the 768mb version is enough.

Very good choice  Not what I recommended but you will be very happy with the card nonetheless.
