GTX 460 Fan Speed Locked ?

Hi guys, ran a couple searches but couldn't find anything .. I just picked up an EVGA GTX 460 1GB SC. With EVGA Precision and Afterburner it looks like I can only set the fan speed between 40-80%, RivaTuner complains about drivers and won't let me play with it at all.

Is there a way to tone down the fan speed less than 40% at all? I'm trying to tone down the volume on it a bit, is the only other option to get an aftermarket GPU Cooler?

Thanks!

Try RivaTuner. Both of those programs are based on it so you should get the basics pretty quickly, and it gives you a lot more control.

EDIT: I'm an idiot that doesn't read. There's a thread on manually specifying driver, I'll track it down for you to make up for it.

change 18585 to whatever the current driver number is, removing the decimal. (258.96 becomes 25896)

Open <Power User> tab -> Press <Open database> button -> Browse for RivaTuner.rtd database file (located in the application root folder) -> Expand <System> node -> Ensure that <Hexadecimal display> button is NOT pressed (otherwise 18585 will be treated as a hexadecimal value instead of decimal one) -> Double click <ForceDriverVersion> and enter 18585

Thanks zagood! I definitely appreciate the effort :)

I did the ForceDriverVersion change to 25896, hit OK and restarted RivaTuner. Same error though, pops up with an Unsupported Driver warning and there's no options to change fan control, Hardware monitor, etc. in the arrow/triangle next to Customize.

Haha that's funny, I was JUST about to come back to this thread and post that exact link.

I went ahead and hacked in the GTX 460 into the RivaTuner CFG file and got Fan Control to show up- but it ALSO only lets me set fan speeds between 40-80% .. oy. Looks like there may not be a way to change that.

Since 40% is still pretty loud it looks like an aftermarket GPU cooler may be my only shot at getting some sleep at night. D'oh!

Same problem here, I have the Gigabyte GTX 460 1GB and Rivatuner will not work, have not used it before either.

Although MSI Afterburner works, I can mess around with voltage, all clocks and can set fan speed to 100%.

what type of fan do these things have? my gtx 260 fan is very quiet at 40%, and even at 55% it's not too bad.

Well, I suspect there's a difference between 32 bit and 64 bit drivers. I can set the fan much higher in 32 bit than 64 bit but I haven't tried turning it below 40%. It's probably not worth downgrading though.

Ah, that may be the case - I'm on 64-bit Windows 7.

I'm not really interested in the 80% max cap though, more the 40% min I'm interested in overriding. At max load I'm hitting around 70 C w/ 60% fan speed, and 80% is ridiculously loud so I'd be surprised if I needed 100%. Sitting on a loud 40% fan on a 2D desktop is pretty crappy though.

The blower fan on the EVGA 1GB SC I like, because it exhaust the hot air out of the case, but it does get a little whine at above 60% speed. I run mine at 75% and my temps while playing crysis never exceed 60c. I can see where you may want to run it at higher speed if you want to pull 900 core out of it though.
