GTX 460 @ 900 Mhz replacement for 1680x1050

I can't decide between a "MSi Twin Frozr III GTX 570 1280 MB" and a "Sapphire HD7850 OC 2GB". They would cost me exactly the same money.

I will be OC'ing both, hard, expect to overvolt the 7850 and get to the 1100-1200 Mhz core range. The GTX 570 is more powerful on stock, 7850 beats it by far after OC. 7850 has more VRAM, but I game in a lower resolution and I won't change my DELL 2209WAf IPS screen ever (lifetime warranty FTW!).

I can't find a comparison of full OC'd Twin Frozr III 570 and same Sapphire 7850. I can't tell how much of an issue the texture memory will be, but I play BF3 a lot and ARMA2, ARMA3 is on the horizon - lots of textures and complex AA.

Is going for the 2GB OC 7850 and OC'ing it even further the best way to go, like I think it to be?

Also, apparently, there's a GTX 660 coming in two weeks. Maybe I should wait for the price drop.

The reference 570s seem rather lightly built and are a generation behind the Radeon.Their unsatisfactory level of VRAM would have to be a concern going forward as well.
Hopefully the MSi has a more robust PCB design but I'd still go with the 7850 and overclock it till it calls you "Daddy"!

Op for ur resolution a 6870 or a gtx 560 should suffice.But if u plan to upgrade ur monitor I would recommend a 7850.Look for an asus dc ii 7850 or msi power edition.

He already has a 460. I don't think that would be much of an upgrade.

well, it is enough in everything BUT the two games I play most where I'd like AA on top of details - ARMA 2 and bf3. And since I will be paying for raw power, more vram is definitely welcome.

I would recommend planning for the future. Buying a card that just gets by for what you want here and now seems like a waste of money. Spend a little more money now and buy a card that would last you a couple years.

I already had a card like that for 2 years, that was enough but it started being a bit too weak in some games.

As a new owner of a GTX 670 who just dropped nearly $500 and can't enjoy a smooth gaming experience with vsync... I'm skeptical of this claim.

The only objective claim to be made about this is that Nvidia usually gets their Sli profiles out faster, and even that's not a given some times. Both companies have issues with their drivers, it's just that GCN is a totally new arch coming with it's own quirks.

I don't think the resolution is enough to push the card to the point a big difference in FPS will be noticeable, well, at least in the RPGs I'm playing right now (like Skyrim, Two Worlds II, Divinity II, Sacred 2, Kingdoms of Amalur, etc...).

I know the O.P. doesn't want to get a higher resolution monitor but it might be something to think about if the performance gain when he switches out cards isn't what he was expecting. I hope you post back with your impressions once you get the HD 7850 - I'm curious to see if its my CPU or resolution that was holding me back (or a little of both). I've already returned the HD 7850.

I'm yat to launch it, but I expect that it's your cpu indeed. I had a i3-540 @ 4.6 Ghz with my gtx 460 before an after the cpu upgrade I made phenomenal progress, performance-wise.

I agree but I don't think a Phenom II x4 980 is holding back a GTX 460 really even my 560 se is maxing out all my games @ 60fps except Metro which I run with Physx off and DX11 Maxed out @ 30fps on a 1680x1050 rez. Also I have an OCed Phenom II x4 955 @ 3.6Ghz.
