Currently game at 1680 x 1050 w/ q6600 at 3.2ghz but w/ gtx 460 1gb. Wanted extra vram for bf3. Used 6950 2gb for $140 worth it or wait a lil till 7850 drops in price a lil?

No price checks, please

This performance difference is probably not worth $140:

I would upgrade to a 7870 at minimum... wait for a sub $200 black friday sale?

If he hasn't tried it, he can't say it will unlock. In any case, unlocking is worth about 5% more performance, so unlock or not, it's not going to be a huge upgrade over what you have. 7870 would get you better percent increase in framerate per dollar, even at current prices, and it'd be new with full warranty.

I would say the HD 7950 is the card which would be a significant upgrade. Atleast more than 2x performance. watch out for good deal and grab one with a good cooler like sapphire HD 7950 dual x or gigabyte HD 7950 windforce. you would need to spend 200 bucks more after selling the GTX 460. well worth the money.

Thanks guys. how about a 7850 2gb? My q6600 wouldn't bottleneck the 7950 or 7870 too badly at 1680 x 1050?

With a 7950 on a Q6600 you'd have a lot of wasted power at 1680x1050. I think you'll see good improvement with a 7870, but it will be pretty limited by your Q6600; is it overclocked at all?

Food for thought:

I believe a Q6600 is pretty similar to a Phenom II at a given clock.

What about the gtx 660. Would that be a worthwhile upgrade?
Anything 7850 and up will show a marked improvement. However, your Q6600 will hold you back (realize that the CPU architecture is 6 years old). Yuriman's graph is a great comparison to show just how much improvement a modern processor can give you in some games. That said, recommendations on how to proceed are tough to make without knowing your absolute budget.

If you're generally happy with the performance of your system save for running out of VRAM just get an HD 7850 2GB or GTX 660. While you won't see much of an increase in FPS with that CPU and resolution, you will take care of the VRAM issue.

Well I do wanna see an increase in FPS and high AA. So do u think maybe I should upgrade my CPU 1st and keep the gtx 460? Or do u think replacing the gtx 460 will be a better upgrade? I really don't wanna upgrade both cpu and gpu.
