A GTX440 might be a good mid-range product, especially if it has some nice OC headroom :)

NVs trouble is their time lag atm... already 6+ months for Fermi (many disappointed), now 2-3months (+more time for actual availability?) for the mid-range parts.

Its going to be a year soon since ATI released its 5xxx series cards. Got to think not long after NV has cards in the market ATI will be coming out with refined / refreshed products and i'm sure they'll be keen to plug the 5770 - 5830 gap, then from my POV they'd pretty much have the market sewn up (speaking as a gamer with price: performance in mind).

tbh the whole mid range is a bit of a disaster - the 5770 and 5830 just aren't that quick for the money. You could buy faster cards a year ago.

While you can roll your eyes at nvidia if they decided to rebadge a GTX 260 or 275 as a 3xx card the sad fact is if they just released those cards at the sort of prices you could get them at last year they would both be comfortable price/performance winners in today's market.

The most interesting cards are the 450 and 440. The main reason is their TMU and ROP are very high and not cut, see what happened to the 5830, cut TMU/ROP leads to a crap card.

So with the same shader as the 285, but more efficient TMU and more ROP will end up being fairly faster, especially with 4xAA or more. I wager it may even be near the 5850 levels if they can clock it around 750mhz+. They should be able to given its a smaller die.

Well, Fermi's arch is quite different from gt200, the 470 was already close to the 5850 so I doubt a the 450 and 440 will anywhere near 5850 performance with a lot less shaders.

We still don't know if these cards are going to use GDDR5. Even if they do, their memory bandwidth will most likely be less. So they could end up around 4890/275 performance.

The problem you've forgotten is the memory bandwidth. Sure, GDDR5 should be able to offset the 256bit interface, but as we've seen with the GTX480 and 470, nVidia has not been able to clock the GDDR5 that high. The result is that the GTX480 has only 10% memory bandwidth advantage over the GTX285 when that advantage should be closer to 50%.

Fixt that for you.():)

No, the 5830 is a dire card.
It's terrible, and yet in the UK it's only about 5% cheaper than a 5850. No reasn to ever even consider buying it. It truly is terrible

The GTX470/480 aren't mid-range cards, even if they aren't particularly good from a consumer perspective. They still aren't as terrible as the HD5830 though, because while they may be expensive and power hungry, they perform.
The HD5830 is expensive, more power hungry than the 5850 and really doesn't perform.

Terrible is about the best adjective to describe the 5830. That's why I'm really betting on the 450 and 440 to put on the pain. With 5770s going for ~$150, why the hell is the 5830 $240? Hopefully the 450 launches at $249 and beats the 5830 in FPS (should not be difficult, since the 275 is generally a little bit faster).

Agree 5830 is a terrible.

You'd be mad not to either spend more and get 5850 or less and get 5770 :)

Even luckier if you snagged a new 4890 when the prices were rock bottom like i did :p
