I don't remember what aigo said it was supposed to be a picture of, but looking at the name of the image, it seems to indicate that it was passed off as the "4970x4" :).

...there is a small heatsink on the top PCB that could possibly be the bridge chip.

The underside of the PCB shot also shows a chip in the same location.

I'm certainly not knowledgeable enough on the details of how video cards work or Photoshop to confirm or deny this card, but it is clear that if this is a hoax it is done by someone with way more skill than whoever did this: http://img352.imageshack.us/im...10/4970x4smedithj5.jpg

Hmm, well, you're right, I didn't see the mini-heatsink because of the shadow cast by the cooler. So most of this is at least plausible enough to make you wonder.

The 2 HDMI ports and lack of DVI ports could possibly be explained away by them wanting as much space for the exhaust vents as possible. Cards with VGA or DVI ports normally only have one slot for exhaust, and that includes both the 4870X2 and GTX 295. This thing has two available, due to the HDMI ports.

The solder points on the back of the PCB match the components on the front as far as I can tell. If it's a hoax, it does seem like a really elaborate one.

 I was hoping someone could come up with something conclusive that would point to this being a hoax. That thing's been bugging me all day.

I'm still not sure what it is. I haven't found any telltale seams or other signs of Photochop, but I have a hard time believing someone actually made a real mock up. Maybe 3DS Max models combined with Photochop? A lot of the surfaces look a bit smooth and matte to me, with no reflections.

The other thing that's a little suspicious are those solid state caps -- they're completely silver colored. I don't think I've ever seen any without at least some kind of company markings. Also, no SLI connectors :p.

In this pic, my guess is that the background is a real photo, the card and fan were modeled in 3DS (or Blender, etc), and the "soldering" is just a texture.

Hi there,
The model was created as a april joke for the server Extrahardware
I started to work on it in March 2009. I spent on it parts of my free time (about 7 to 8 days) during one months.
 That was some pretty slick work. Must have been fun to do. Too bad, I kind of wanted to believe.

damn, that looked real. the most convincing was as nitro said: no holes in the shroud for the pci-e. hahah

that and it's darn near lunacy in the first place. but we can dream right!?

:p
