I found used EVGA GTX 285 on craig for 250, is it a good card compared to lets say 4890, is it a good price on that card?

The other option is to go cheaper and get a new HD4890 or a GTX 275, if you can find either of them in stock somewhere for a decent price ($200~$230)

Unfortunately they aren't really available very easily anymore.

$250 isnt a horrible price compared to the retail gtx285 price but there may be better options. for 60 bucks more you could get a brand new faster 5850. what does the rest of your system look like and what res are you playing at?

Aren't the 5830 and GTX285 pretty close to one another? Or is the GTX285 faster? If they are pretty close in performance, I'd get a 5830 since it'll be new and give you DX11 support. If the GTX285 is that much faster then the 5830, then I guess that's not a terrible price.

the 5830 is barely better than a gtx260. in fact in some games like Borderlands and Modern Warfare 2 the gtx260 is faster than a 5830.

i play on 1920x1080, thing is, i already have ASUS 5870 voltage tweak, but 440 dollars kinda hard to swallow atm. Im still within 30 day trial. I was thinking about taking 5870 back and settling with cheaper card, i also have an option of picking up MSI GTX 275 twin frozr for 220.

The 5850's go on sale for $250-260 every now and then if you keep your eyes open. Given that, I wouldn't pay more than $200 for a GTX285.

There were 2 285's on hardforum for $200. there is a 275 OC which performs the same as the 285 on hardforum right now for $175 i say get that 275 OC and save yourself some $. both are good but 275 OC runs cooler and uses less power due to smaller die size.

link to 275 OC $175 shipped

Heres a 280 for $180, he'll take $170 if you ask. I almost bought it.

I'm staying away from anything that XFX makes, after really bad experience with XFX 4890 non reference PCB's

I know where you come from, I had to return a ZDFC card just a few days ago. These 5850's are free from that issue, so I bit :)
