GTX 285 and 650W PSU, ok?

I an deciding between the GTX 285 and GTX 280. I have a S12 Seasonic 650W PSU that is a couple of months old. I have read that the minimum PSU for these cards are 550W PSU's. However, I have also read a post on Newegg where the guy bought a GTX 280 and had an OCZ 750W PSU, and that it wasn't powerful enough for his GPU and went out and bought a 1000W PSU in it's place.

Now my PSU was around $170. Do I need to spend another $250 to get a new PSU, or do you think it will be ok? Anyone using a S12 Seasonic 650W PSU with their GTX280 or 285?

Moving to the PSUs section.

The S12 650W is MORE than enough for a single GTX 285....anyone who says they need a 1000W supply is full of it....with a capital SH. That is precisely the reason that no one should ever bother reading newegg reviews.

You could run two GTX285s with power to spare. Newegg reviews are good for one thing only, and that's finding out about a recurring problem that a certain product has. For example, several reviews of DVD drive A mention that after a few months it develops a whine. Things like this are pretty much the one thing they're good for

hmmm...no.

GTX 285 2 6 pin PCI-E connectors. Allowed to draw a maximum of 75W from each and 75W from the PCI-E slot....that is a maximum of 225W. If it actually drew 225W though, the 8 pin connector would likely still be there....so I think it is safe to assume that the GTX 285 will draw under 225W no matter what the load.

Common misconception. A single GTX280 pulls maybe 200W at load. Hell, an i7 rig with a GTX295 pulls only like 450w total, and only ~225-250 of that is GPU

Fixed it for ya.
