GTX 280 problem

I've just installed a EVGA GTX 280 in my system and I'm running into a problem. I power the system on and the GPU's fan does not spin. There is a red light on the GPU as well. There is power going to the MOBO and the CPU fan is spinning. Could this be a PSU problem?

Thanks.

Yes, and that may be the problem. My current PSU does not have a native 8-pin connector. So I am using the 6-pin to 8-pin adapter cable that was supplied with the video card. I am wondering if this could be causing the problem.

The PSU came with my original Voodoo case and I'm guessing it's manufactured by Voodoo. It has a continuous output of 650W.

My system specs:

ASUS P5Q Deluxe
Intel Core 2 Duo E8600
2 X 2GB OCZ Platnium 6400
EVGA GTX 280
Voodoo 650W PSU

I have that same card. One thing you have to remember is, even if your PSU has enough "recommended" wattage, you have to have enough amps on the rail that is hooked to your card. My PSU has 60 amps on a single 12v rail, whereas some have it divided between 2 or 3 rails. Might not be getting enough amperage through your rail for that gas-guzzling card.

i had the same problem of the sort with my 8800 gt at first i thought that the problem was the psu

but i tried underclocking my cpu on my then g33 board, and it worked fine(a miracle, yes it might be)

try it and then try to borrow some one's psu and check

Red light is the troubleshooting code for "no power" I believe. How are you connecting the GPU connectors? You should have:

2x4-pin (molex) to a single 6-pin PCIE
2x6-pin PCIE to a single 8-pin PCIE

If you have them connected this way and its still not booting then its possible your PSU isn't providing sufficient power to the 12V rail. Does your PSU list how many total amps supplied on the 12V rails? Your options would most likely be getting a new PSU or getting a new card that requires less power. GTX 260 or 285 both use 2x6-pin and 189W or less.
