Has anyone tested the difference of a GTX 280 on a PCI-E 1.1 vs a PCI-e 2.0 motherboard?

Did a google search, all i ever see is comments like "the difference should be small and not worth the cost of upgrading a p35 to a newer pci-e 2.0 board"

Uhhh....you dont buy a GTX 280 for "best bang per buck" "save your $$$" , you buy it for performance.

Anyway, are there really any hard numbers out there to show if there actually is a difference?

Rather than someone just blindly commenting "there should be little difference".

Ok most i could find was this at Toms.
http://www.tomshardware.com/re...-express-2-0,1915.html

From what i gather from this is in the testing ....
X8 = PCIE-1.1 performance
x16 = PCIE- 2.0 performance

Is this correct or am i not completely understanding the test?

But unfortunately i still cant find if a gtx280 will saturate a pci-e 1.1 board and lose some performance.

Yes, PCIe 2.0 8X = PCIe 1.1 16X. That article won't help you much because for the 9800GX2 there were two cards that needed duplicate/similar data which cause higher traffic in the PCIe bus than a single card and the 3850 is woefully underpowered in comparison to the GTX 280 to be of any help. I would go out on a limb and say that don't bother unless you absolutely must have every last drop of performance and/or plan to keep this motherboard for 2-3 years and/or play or plan to play lot of Flight Simulator X.

I don't mean to be rude ashishmishra as i'm sure your post has good intentions.

But i Can "go out on a limb" and guess myself.
Thats the exact kind of answer i dont need, its not useful.

And Yes I know the 3850 is too underpowered to compare to a gtx 280.(who doesnt?)

As i stated above in my first two posts, which you ignored or didnt read completely, the closest i could find was a 9800GX2 test.

And in my post right above yours i even bolded it... But unfortunately i still cant find if a gtx280 will saturate a pci-e 1.1 board and lose some performance.

Thnx for your input anyway.

It's really only an issue when you run out of VRAM on the card. While this is still rare even with a 512MB card, when it happens the difference between 1.1 and 2.0 is double digits, and I saw a review on 1 website that had core 2 platforms taking about a 75% hit, while AMD platforms took about a 50% hit (likely due to the higher memory bandwidth on the AMD platform because of the IMC), though keep in mind that the AMD had a lower top FPS initially. (but after VRAM ran out, it took the lead)

Of course, ram is cheap, and you can easily get a card with > 512MB VRAM and you'll probably never have to worry about the lack of VRAM situation during the lifetime of the card.

Cool, is it posted on here?
Nevermind, i can search for it.
THNX for the info.

See, my problem is i have a 780i board and an e8400, now my e8400 doesnt overclock near as well with the sli board as it did with my p35 Abit IP35-E board.
But i didnt care cuz i needed the 780i for my sli setup even thjough tyhe board runs hot and just doesnt have that "rock stable" feeling i had with the intel chipset.

Now im giving that up for a single gtx280 and i cant decide if i should go back to an ip35-e or just keep running this 780i mobo.

I think im better off being more cpu bound, cuz i can make that up just by running 1920x1200 with 4x AA or 6x AA and 16x aniso.
As opposed to choking the pci express which will just get worse as i add more AA and anisotropic filtering.

Got a feeling i'll probably eventually cave and buy a newer intel chipset.
