Wow, the prices are crazy. You know, with the economy the way it is, people will buy the more affordable option. Regardless who has the performance crown. Personally nvidia was my next choice but with ATi's new offerings they look like they will reign over the price/performance area. Nvidia isn't stupid and will soon follow suit. $630 for a graphics card? No thanks! The $200-$300 market is where ATi is and thats where most of the market will be buying. Good news for ATi and bad for Nvidia.

I think what we are more likely to see is a price drop on the 8800/9*** series. It is already developed, uses a smaller die, and as we can see, half a 280 will perform about like a 9800GTX, so not too much to gain from cutting pipes.

I'm not even gonna bother with the 280 at those prices, just gonna get a gx2 now since it's faster anyway. Very disapointing release from nvidia where they charge that much for a card that isn't even top of the line.

meh, probably even less units then the G92... its just that there isnt such a HUNGER for them... Back then it blew everything else out of the water and was really really cheap. Now we are talking about a 650$ card, so the demand is lower.

I thought the 4850 performs on par with a 8800gts/9800gtx?
4850=200.00$
8800gts=165.00$

gtx260 (399.00$) =4870 (349.00$) performance correct?

Well,

I am glad to see the not so good performance out of the 2xx series, seeing as how i just bought a 9800gtx. Its amazing that it will cost as much as it does even though it doesnt perform that well. Could buy 2x 9800gtx's for that price tag and out perform one of those cards. Nvidia needs to get their heads on straight.

I think we'll see quick price drops in July. Rumors were that the 4870 was originally aimed at a $229 price point, but they raised it since the chip turned out to have unexpectedly good performance (and possibly because Nvidia's new generation did not deliver the huge performance leap people were hoping for).

Anyway, this means ATI has room to lower the price significantly and stay profitable. Hopefully, that will put a lot of downward price pressure on the GT200 cards. A $279-$299 GTX 260 and $449-$499 GTX 280 seem like reasonable prices over the next couple months, especially considering the R700 (4870X2) will be out in August.

The only upside here, is that game designers are not crazy. They realize that most people cant afford these new cards, and because they want their games to sell, they will make them scalable enough to be ran on older cards, and still allow to turn on all eye candy on lower resolutions such as 1280x1024. For this reason, there's simply not much to do with all that power the 280 offers. At the moment, it's really just a toy for people who have too much money. Most games will run at max settings, on older cards just fine. And Crysis? Who plays it anyway? No wonder the devs behind that game switched to the console market. Most people who bothered to play Crysis were the ones who pirated it, since they had nothing to lose if the game didn't run well enough on their PCs.

Not really. With an 8800GTX, at 1920x1200 with everything maxed other than AA, my AoC framerates are in the high teens to high twenties. Crysis is unplayably slow with high settings.

I'll likely be getting a 9800GX2 since it has the same or higher benchmarks at 70% of the price of the GTX 280. I am a bit dissappointed by it.

As soon as I see the benches from the 4870X2 I'll pull the trigger. I smell a repeat (performance-wise) of 7900GTX vs x1900xtx (=ATI wins)

I think he said "most games", not all. I would have to agree with him as I play EVERY single one of my games maxed.

Ha Ha, are they serious? I think direct marketing to recent lottery winners is the best approach for nVidia right now.

I wish I got 600 bucks laying around the house. But still even if I got the cash I want to see what ATI is offering next few weeks though before buying.

Same here. At this time, there is no compelling reason for me to upgrade from a 8800 GTX to a GTX 280, especially given the GTX 280's current prices. I'll wait for ATi to make it's move and see if nVIDIA responds with adjusted pricing.

rofl... check out the PNY "See price in cartSee price in cart" And you click and find out it has a hidden 50$ MIR to make it 599$...

nVidia's "minimum advertised price" in action folks...
