GTX 280 fan not spinning no display

I just got a bunch of new components for a new system set up, put them all together, powered up, and no display. The motherboard fan, PSU fan and one of the case fans spun (I don't know why the other two didn't), the power LED on the GPU is green, but its fan is not spinning, and it's not outputting anything to the monitor.

System:

ASUS P5N-D Motherboard
Coolmax RM 850W PSU
Core2 E8500 OEM CPU

Any ideas?

Your pc is not posting.(starting up)
Go ahead and remove your GTX 280 and set it aside, then reseat the cpu and memory and check all connections.
Reset the bios on the mobo.

Try to get the system to respond without the GTX 280 just to be safe.
You should get an error "beep code" for no video card installed if the rest of the hardware is working correctly. (usually 1 long beep followed by 3 short beeps, but some mobos differ)

Once you have the system responding correctly, insert your GTX 280.

The cards fan should start spinning once the pc posts. (you'll hear the "post beep" )

note: its not 'traditional" to try and get a pc running with no video card as i just listed above.
I only listed this method since you are obviously concerned that your GTX 280 may be faulty, so i suggested this method for your own piece of mind that youre not hurting your GTX 280 while troubleshooting.

But its most likely just that the pc isnt posting at all and theres nothing wrong with your graphics card. :thumbsup:

i have exactly the same problem can u tell me how i reset the cpu and bios please i had to turn on and off my computer 10 times before the fan spun and i can start to use my computer. i built the computer which i know how to do but ive never had to reset the bios so i dunno how to SAFELY lol

To reset bios, unplug your PSU (from the wall), pull out the motherboard battery, wait 30 seconds, then reinsert and startup

unfortunately it hasnt worked im still havin the same problem is it possible my card is the problem in which case what should i do to resolve that send it back ?

Do you have access to any other GPU so you can rule out the mobo being defective? Do you have a friend who can plug your GPU into their system?

ok guys why are we referring to the video card as "GPU" in this instance? Let's not try to be geek. Let's just call it a video card because one of the units in question here is not just a GPU but a whole video card. (I can't imagine anyone desoldering the GPU unit out of the video card). I know the terms GPU and video card are used interchangeably, and with the advent of powerful GPUs and recent marketing hype.. many geeks feel that they need to use the term GPU rather than video cards... but in this instance.. going geeky can lead to ambiguity.

Anyway OP, you need to disconnect pretty much everything and reconnect the basics (CPU, RAM, video) components and see if you can get the PC to post. If you have a PCI video card, then use that! (This is one of those rare times that you wish you had kept your 10 year old PCI video card!).

I have a sneaky feeling that something is wrong with the motherboard. Try to reset CMOS by disconnecting the power supply and popping out the CMOS battery (or short the CMOS jumper).

but you also said that your other 2 case fans are not running. Ummm.. why not? are the case fans connected to the connectors on the motherboard? or are the fans connected to a 4-pin molex from the power supply??? If the fans are connected to the motherboard, and they're not running,.. then it could be a clue pointing to a m/b issue.

Sounds to me like you have multiple problems!

My computer acts normaly when turned on all the fans spin but the graphics card doesnt. I reset the cmos like u guys said unplugged the power supply and took the mobo battery out waited 30 secs then retried and there was no change took me 6 times that time before the graphics card started. As for taking out all the rest i havent tried yet. Im gonna take my card to my friends i will have to take my power supply aswell as his wont be ebough to run it

Are you plugging the extra power connector from your PSU to the video card?

hey ya guys i got it fixed i basicly rebuilt it reseting the cmos did the trick took everything out i just wanna say thank you to you all for the speedy posts and the helpfullness. You guys are great i wish yas all the best thank you again
