GTX 260 (not 216) upgrade to ???

So the upgrade bug has gotten me and the Bing cashback promotions are making me itch.

I have the choice of getting a few things..

XFX 4870 x2 for ~260 ish

GTX 295 for ~400ish

GTX 285 for 300ish

I have my vanilla XFX that I plan on getting ~160 for from good old ebay.

The 4870x2 is looking pretty good no?

I'm fine accepting the multi-GPU set up, and I do not have an SLI board so the simple solution of buying another 260 doesn't work in my situation.

I run my games at 1920x1280 so the 4870 with its memory bandwidth appears to be also a pretty solid choice. Microstutter is a variable issue for me.

It's either that or an upgrade to i7 and keep my GTX 260.

I know there is a new generation of cards around the corner but the x2 has come down from its initial release price by alot and the fact that the cashback program will go down to regular precentages by the end of the month that is colouring my choice.

The 4870x2 would provide the best bang for the buck out of the options you listed. It is faster and cheaper than the GTX285 and the GTX295 is no where near fast enough over the 4870x2 to justify it's $140 premium in my opinion.

But, with that being said, new cards are right around the corner, the new Radeons rumored specs are pretty good. It looks that Nvidia will be launching their new cards not too long after AMD, so there should be lots of intriguing options over the next few months. I'd probably hold off for a little while, but if you really want to upgrade right now I'd think the 4870x2 is the best choice of those listed.

Upgrade to core i7 now, and sli your 260 later on for cheap. Most new x58 boards do sli and crossfire. Multi gpu solutions rock with the core i7 platform.

Your system is pretty good. I'd wait for Core i7 on 1156 (September 6th or 8th I believe) and for ATI's new cards on September 10th. Then take your pick.

normally i'd say dont bother.

but given the 20% off at some stores, plus you'll probably get more for your 260 than usual on ebay (becuse they are doing 10-12%) if you do buy it now right now.

If you can't wait a month to learn of the new offereings get an HD 4870 X2. You're CPU is fine @ 4 Ghz - honestly don't think thats holding you back. I think you'll be hard pressed to get $160 on eBay for your GTX 260 (192) at this point in time.

I'd say lock yourself in a closet for a month or so. Next-gen cards from ATi should be out by then and you'll be able to take a better decision.

Unfortunately it didn't happen.

I got a new XFX (My favorite Brand) GTX 285 for 250 shipped. Just sold my GTX 260 for 160 dollars.

Net upgrade was ~90 dollars. And I sold some computer scraps laying around for the difference.

Not a bad deal.

That's a great deal because you sold the 260 for $160, which is almost the price I got my 4890 for 🙂 Right now you can get brand new 260s for way less than $160.

How much faster is the 285 compared to your old 260 at 1920x1080?

Judging by my research it should be roughly 15-25% better.
