I'm beginning to think that all of these HD48XX vs GTX2X0 threads are kind of rediculous. People need to realize that what is going on here is a big pissing match. First of lets look at some facts. Nvidia released powerful cards at a high price. AMD released a an equally impressive set of cards at a bargain price relatively speaking.

The only thing nvidia could do to answer was drop the price of their cards to remain competetive, which still wasnt't enough. What to do next? oh I get it.... lets "drop in" the core 216 and "drop out" the "old" GTX 260. Further more, the more recent benchmarks are for a the GTX260 core 216 SC (superclock) as if their plain ole GTX260 core 216 wasn't enough. All the while the AMD is still happily pushing out MAINLY Vanilla cards albeit some with different amounts of memory.

I think AMD has a lot of confidence in the current generation of Radeons and doesn't need to release a HD4870 1024 stream processor extreme BBQ edition. I can admit the current Geforce cards are quite nice and awesome solutions for any enthusiast or gamer alike. It's too bad that the Radeons are tarnished with driver issues in select titles. Atleast you can "bypass" some of the more serious problems such as the Far Cry 2 hitching using the GFX_max FPSX command.

I feel bad for the sap who already has a GTX260 and buys another one down the road only to realize that they won't SLI since the second one he bought is a core 216(not entirely sure if this is the case). On top of all this I think Nvidia destroyed the image of the GTX280 cause it still costs just a little bit less than sli'ed GTX 260's but low and behold a single GTX260 core 216 SC card is bitting at it's heels. Things just don't add up. This whole TWIMTBP branding is doing great things for Nvidia since they are in cahoots with game developers. I can only imagine how well the Radeons would be performing under the same kinda situation.

This is just some random ramblings which I'm sure some people's panties are gonna get soaked over but I am very much on the fence on which Team is better. I've owned lots of both. Anyhow' I do enjoy the whole Rebellion vs. the Empire motif going on here. I think in a month or two AMD will get on the ball again with some decent driver performance increases. But I also think shortly there after we'll see the green team discontinue the GTX260 core 216 and conjure up another incarnation of it...... say a GTX260 core 216 SC Mass Confusion edition

/ grabs popcorn and dims the lights

I think that's enough random rambling and brain-dumping for one thread...

Are you trying to say "I love NVIDIA and bless them for their Holiday changes" with all of this?

yeah, maybe... I do like nvidia... as much as I like ATi. but I kinda have to say.... What's in a name? I think Far CRy 2 should never have been called Far CRy at all... why not call it Africa at War (AAA)? At the say time a core216 should be called a GTX270 after all they did make a large enough change to the card.but as they did with the 8800GTS, 9800gtx + and now the GTX260 lets just confuse the sh!t out of people.

Don't feel sorry for the "sap" that buys a GTX 260 (216) to pair in SLI with an older GTX 260 (192). They will work, the second card will use just 192 shader clusters to match the old card. Basically a non-issue. You're tossing out a lot of hyperbole mostly aimed at Nvidia, but product upgrades, price cuts and improved software (drivers and PhysX support) in the face of competition are a GOOD thing.

Oh, as far as ATI just sticking to old releases because they are so good, the two dual GPU cards are hardly "vanilla". Slapping 1 GB of RAM on an HD 4870 (something it should have had at launch) or 1 or 2 GB of RAM on an HD 4850 (where its a marketing exercise that nets very little benefit over the 512 MB) isn't sticking with "vanilla". Third party cooling solutions to deal with the heat of the borderline reference cooling isn't sticking to "vanilla". Cards being factory OC'd is common and no different than Nvidia doing the same.

Personally, I hope the fight between the two stays ugly. Intense competition = better products and lower prices. I'm not worried about either one. I was worried when Nvidia steamrolled ATI for almost two years after the release of the 8800 GTX and ATI stated they would no longer try to compete in the high end market. THAT really worried me. It's all good now (and this "sap" loves his EVGA GTX 260 "FTW" Edition - long pretentious name, 192 shader clusters and all :D).

A lot of what is happening now looks a lot like 3dfx with it's Glde API. Nvidia is trying to force developers to use their proprietary hardware with physx and the like. Not bad you say, but then ATI and Intel are pushing something more generic with Havok. Neither of these physics APIs have really gone mainstream and it has left us with hardware without real use yet. Maybe soon, maybe not, we will see something interesting.

On the other hand you have Nvidia ads splattered in loading screens "The way it's meant to be played", that you cannot remove or skip through. Annoying to say the least. Especially if the way it's meant to be played doesn't do much better than the competition (Crysis anyone?). Both cards summarily suck at that game no matter the CPU and memory attached to them. Playable they are, but good they are not.

/sigh

Lets face it nvidia had to go way out of their way to make the GTX260 look good. It really shows that they underestimated what ATi had coming this gen. Even now they still need to take advantage of TWIMTBP optimizations, to be ahead of the 4870. Those optimizations will more than likely get counter later with the 8.12 update.

Lets see what ATi can do once they had proper time to optimize their drivers for these new releases. If we take crysis for instance you'll see that stock for stock a 4870 1GB still beats the c216.

@Leyawiin

The reference cooler is hardly borderline. At between 37-39% fan speed my OC 4870 hits 64-65c while gaming. Even at idle it runs about 46-47c with a very low 9-11% fan speed.

People want to be told "You are smarter than all those dudes that bought the alternative".

Fortunately for us the consumers, going home with a 4850 or a 9800 GTX+, a GTX 260 216 or a 4870 1GB means we have a great card that will do the job :)

Nvidia gets nice benchmarks from their investment with TWIMTBP - because when a new game is out it has a good chance of running better in nvidia hardware ( especially in these stalemate times).

Ati on the other hand reaps the rewards of raising from the death and force nvidia to play honest with their prices.

But that's their problem.

PhysiX vs havok is also their problem. When they decide what will be standard, software will start to use it and we can buy it.

CUDA is useful for folders. Nvidia had the advantage there, but Ati is enabling STREAM so it will become less of a choice (although CUDA is betta than STREAM, and STREAM pwns CUDA threads will pop up).

LOL that's so true it makes me laugh for real.

Seriously it's ridiculous. I almost enjoy the fanboys on console forums these days more than the video card forums.

I don't see why threads like these always have to turn in this direction. maybe next time, lavaheadache might refrain from thinking out loud, lest he wishes for provocation. Here's hoping.

What I just posted in the "HD4870 1GB - worth it?" thread also goes for this thread -- if you guys can't keep your discussion related to the topic, then there's no need for you to be in this thread.

The OP has a topic? lol. I'll take Potpourri for 1000 Alex. Honestly I don't see how anything with ATI or Nvidia in a sentence can be OT in this post.
