GTX 260 (55 nm) or GTX 285?

I currently have an EVGA 8800GT Superclocked Edition card and am considering upgrading...but I'm torn as to which card will give me the better price/performance ratio--the new GTX 285 or the EVGA 260 Core 215 55nm card (I'm a hard core gamer---Crysis, Fallout 3, Far Cry 2 etc)

they're both 55nm and although the GTX 285 will be the better performer the GTX 260 card should be pretty sweet itself with a better price tag...anyone have any opinions?...also is EVGA the only manufacturer selling the 55nm GTX 260 cards?

get a 55nm GTX 260, either factory o/c'ed or at stock and overclock it yourself. Most of these 55nm 260s should be able to reach GTX 280 speeds. While the GTX 260 has a pretty good bang/buck ratio, the GTX 285 is way overpriced imo and it may take some time for their prices to come down.

EVGA is the only vendor I see so far that's differentiating between the 55nm and 65nm GTX 260 parts. There may be others. And TBH, from the comparisons I've seen, the only dime's worth of difference you'll see between the 55 and 65nm 260 parts is in the pricetags. They seem to OC and consume power at about the same clip, but the 55nm parts are slightly more expensive.

Another consideration that may (or may not) matter to you is that the 55nm parts use different PCBs than the 65 nm parts -- important if you're going for a 3rd party cooling solution, as the ones designed for the 65nm boards won't fit properly on the 55nm boards.

You could always buy a 260 and if it works out to your liking keep it. If you want more step up to a 285 down the line.

I went from the EVAG 8800GT SSC to the 260 c216 65nm... it was a very nice upgrade. I did however put my step up in yesterday for the GTX 285.

The biggest factor in this decision should be the resolution you pna to play at. the 260 9which I own) starts to have troublke at 2560x and is good at 1920x, but kicks butt at 1680x

if you want your card to pump at 2560, then you may consider the 285, but you can SLI two 260's for a similar price and be fine too.

BFG will differentiate the 55nm chip.

original 192 core
BFG GTX 260
available models stock/OC/OC2/OCX/H2OC

later 216 core 65nm
BFG GTX 260 Maxcore
available models OC/OC2/OCX/H2OC

latest 216 core 55nm
BFG GTX 260 Maxcore 55 (it will say so on the card and box)
available models OC/OC2/OCX (for now)

I was also torn by the exact same dilemma, and I chose to go with a GTX 285 instead because I never upgrade my GPU's again until a two years period approximately, and an OC'ed 285 (which I've seen some CRAZY over-clocks of) will last me a couple of months longer than a GTX 260 would, especially since I plan on buying an LCD this summer and I'll suddenly switch from my 1280x1024 resolution to 19200x1200 (which is why I buy the card before the monitor, or else my poor current GTS would get smoked by such a monitor and I'd find myself getting 20FPS in Left4Dead, no thanks).

My XFX 285 will be ordered in just a week, it's in my Shopping Cart right now at Direct Canada for a superb $425 price point with NO ground shipping charges. I'll be happy when I confirm the purchase, I can't wait to see just how much of a difference it'll make when compared to my current G80 GTS (that thing served me well though, until now, it's showing its age in way too many circumstances).

I don't see the "Maxcore 55" yet in retail or on BFG's website. When are these supposed to be available?

Soon... I don't have exact dates. Things are pretty much finalized and ready to go.
