I Get a used GTX 260 (192) for $120. I can also get a GTX 280 for $170 used.

which do you think i should get? is the 280 worth $50 more?

I play at 1900 x 1200 but turn down to 1680 x 1050 when games lag

I try to play the most current FPS games

thanks and please give your opinions for i have to decide tonight.

I'd get the GTX280; at high detail levels it's 30% faster than the GTX260, if not more. I went from a GTX260 (216) to a GTX285, and I thought the upgrade was worth every penny.

I play a lot of games at 1920x1200, too.

for FPS I'd get the GTX 280. If you just played mmorpgs, GTX 260 would serve you well.

i agree, if you can get a 280 for $170, go for it. The 192 SP 260 wont be nearly as powerful as the other 200 series cards.

Out of those options I'd rather get the GTX 280 or neither.
GTX 260 (192) is about on par with a stock 5770 maybe it's a little slower. Considering the 5770 is available for 130 new now it'd be hard for me to pay $120 for something with worse performance that's used. The 5770 also has DX11 support and will use a lot less power.

GTX 280 on the other hand for 170 is a pretty good price since the card will beat out a 4890 and a 5830 in terms of speed. Since 4890s were going for about 180+ while they were available about a month or two ago and 5830s are 240+ now that's a fair price for the performance you're getting.

I thought that too but after looking through 260 and 280 release numbers the average difference is only about 15% at 1920x1200.

the 192sp gtx260 is the better bang for buck card but I would probably spend the extra 50 bucks for the gtx280 too.

Think the 275 is worth $55 more over the 260 (192)?? Looking at this as a 1 year move down for physx card.

yes, both the factory oc'd 275 and the 280 are worth the extra $$ in your case. The 275 is probably a little bit better than a 280 because it will use less power, run cooler, and is slightly newer.

well i have been reading the 128bit bus will be a crippler in DX11 so i want to wait for next gen for dx 11. other than that it is on par with the 260 192 and gets killed by 275 in dx10 i believe. right???

The 128 bit bus with DDR5 is fine for DX11. I'd take a new 5770 over the used GTX260 seeing as they're near the same price. I'd take the GTX275 over any of them if it's in your budget and you have no problem with it being used, though. At your res the extra oomph will help out.

Wow a "What should I get" thread that had helpful advice and didn't devolve into a flame war. Good Job!
