He said "it gives you crazy overclocking ability" which can be taken any way, but "overclocker's dream" he did not say unless he says it later than the timestamp someone linked.

Man, I'd have loved if he said that exact term. Haha. It's cursed! Cursed I tells ya!

Nah, not shilling, just people who long for the old days. When men where men, women where men, and children where men and new GPUs came out every year or so.

They showed it because the card start at 2GHz but cant sustain this frequency at all, Computerbase state 1785Mhz average, at Hardware.fr it is 1783MHz when limitation are removed, this latter site did an exhaustive test in this respect, according to the reviewer max boost frequency can be reached only if the GPU is below 37°C as this is the threshold at wich the temp management kick in and start to limit voltage and frequency..

Not at that die size of ~300-320mm^2. It is a mid-range part and we only need to wait 6 months to a year for true flagships offering double the performance,

A slightly more aggressive fan profile may help some.
 
i see alot of downplaying on this gpu, as if its a total fail or something...

lets remind to ourself that is 30% faster then the last gpu king gtx980ti, and whatever it comes from overclocking is all good...i dont believe max oc will be 2.1ghz, wait for custom gpu's with better cooling and then hit that 2.5ghz barrier...

9-12 and, absent earthquakes, roughly +40% tops. Might get a little more at 4k with hbm2. Quite likely will double 1080 performance at this node but in ~3 years.

I don't think anyone is saying it's a total fail. What I'm hearing is that people feel $700ish is a bit pricey, and that NV somewhat misrepresented what the card was actually capable of by showing one running in excess of 2.1GHz at 67C.

I personally feel both complaints are valid, but it doesn't mean the card itself is bad or a failure.

That cooler is terrible and that PCB is just as bad. Everyone who cares about performance should avoid both. Send NV the message that the enthusiast is not to be milked (unless they want to, in which case :thumbsup🙂.

WTB custom cards or hell, I'd love to see what a custom BIOS can do.

The irony. Some amd engineer/employee says it one time out of place, and they can never live it down.

The boss of Nv says it multiple times and no one remembers? What the heck?
 
Nvidia is the best at making their gpus look good in benchmarks. Reality is a different thing. Hitting a clockspeed and sustaining that clockspeed for a long period of time are 2 different things.

Clearly the 1080 doesn't hold the oc clocks people expected. This is why more thorough testing needs to be done otherwise Nvidia will continue to game benchmarks.

People aren't going out of their way to hurt the "beloved" Nvidia. Anyone who cares about tech isn't happy or impressed by anything shown from both camps. It's literally a battle of which is more unimpressive which we'll see very soon from amd which launch/gpus are the least impressive.

If you're impressed by this generation of gpus from both camps I feel bad for you.
 
So far I'm impressed with the performance data for the GTX 1080. It outperforms the GTX 980TI and Titan X in almost every game I saw run. It also outperformed the Fury X.

When will AMD answer?

No shit it will... How could they get worse performance at a more expensive part on a die shrink??

Just because its slightly faster doesn't make it good or immune from criticism.

Mad because of the usual stuff you find on forums. The card is good, just not great, the only thing I'd call bad is the crappy overclocking seen in reviews. It's satisfying taking a card like a 980ti and getting another 25% out of it over the stock boost clock. These mid range chips released as flagships have not ever delivered major overclock potential. The 680 was the same, you couldn't get much out of it.

Then you have something like GK110 or GM200 that were a good 30% and then some faster over the mid ranged flagships they replaced, that you could then get another 25% performance out of with overclocking. The 1080 is getting like 10% more perf. best case in the reviews I've seen, some reviews it's lower than that. It is what it is.

I'll still be getting a 1080, but I don't need to believe it's a perfect card or even a great one to get one. It will be decent enough, hopefully with a card like a Lightning or Classified realizing a 2.2 to 2.3 ghz sustained clock with the addition of voltage will be possible. That should net a good 25% more performance over what the reviews have the card pegged at. But when the big Pascal geforce comes and you overclock that, going on what we've seen in the past, it will come close to the performance of 1080 SLI. That's why these mid range chips are always underwhelming, you know the big chip is going to embarrass them. Plus we're getting HBM2 on that chip, with whatever gains that will bring.

Fiji wasn't bad. It was a neat product that introduced a lot of cool technologies. The problem is that 980 Ti was a bit faster out of the box, much faster OC to OC, and cheaper to build. It was a business failure but an interesting technical product. Oh, and 4GB of RAM was kind of a deal killer.

Business failure? It may have been a lost leader, but it had to have been made to get to HBM2. Not sure you get that? Where would big pascal be w/o Fiji?
