I run Mandrake 7.1 OK I unstalled everything that was part of XFree 3.3.x and installed 4.0.1 except for the 100 and 75 dpi fonts. They needed me to downgrade rpm to install the new version. Thought that was strange so just reinstalled the 3.3.6 ones. When I startx I get the following. Any clue why the module nvidia does not load? I didn't install the smp kernel drivers. How do I know if my kernel is smp?

Xfree 4.0.1 only supports up to GeForce 256 n not GF2 family cards. The latest Xfree 4.0.2was released just b4 Xmas n supports GF2 cards. I had the same prob with my Suse 7 Linux. I installed the new version n all works well now.

Just visit the Xfree hompage
Xfree homepage
and download the necessary files.

I know 4.0.1 doesn't support it natively, but it should work with the nvidia driver from nvidia. Don't you have to use it with 4.0.2 also to get 3d support. I though the nv driver in XFree86 only did 2d.

OK I installed the GLX drivers this morning and that seemed to work. I had already installed the nvidia driver. I thought the nvidia driver was for 2d and would work without the GLX one. The problem now is that when I move the mouse the screen pans around like a virtual desktop and the pointer just gets stuck in the top right corner. I have the Microsoft Explorer mouse if it matters. It also sets the res or refresh to high by default, but ctrl,alt,- fixes that for now. I changed monitors while I was home fron college. I went from a 17" Viewsonic to a 15" Proview I have at home. Monitors are two heavy to drag back and forth.
