So, I was browsing around on Youtube yesterday and I came upon a GTR2 video (didn't say GTR2 anywhere). It was an in-car video replay for a lap around Laguna Seca. The video quality isn't very good (which was probably alot of it) but I swear it took me about 45 seconds to realize that I wasn't watching a real car. The detail, the vibrations of the car, etc, it was incredible! Now I need to upgrade my PC and get a wheel.

I know it's an old game but man, it's still sharp!

Any GTR2 games on here? What are your thoughts?

GTR, GTL, and GTR2 are pretty much permanently on my hard drive - very few recent games have reached their level of realism. With a decent wheel, they're a blast, at least if you like sims.

The way the trees pop in on the background was sort of a realism killer for me. =)

Just kidding - nice vid tho.

Yeah, but had you not known from the start how long would it have taken you to figure it out??

Compared to the other games I've played (Forza 2, PGR 3/4, and even GT5) the way the game acts/sounds is vastly more realistic than anything I've seen. Forza 2, when you use the in-car view everything is completely smooth. There's no rumbling (even in the grass/kitty litter) and it just has a "video game-esque" look to it. Everything in GTR looks alot better. Heck, watch that and then watch a video clip of a GT3-RSR in-car, the engine sound is a spot on match.

Definately the most realistic looking/seeming game I've seen.

You know, I wish they would try this on Top Gear instead of using the Gran Turismo example.

I think it's a replay, the actual gameplay is probably from the cockpit.

GTR2 is incredible. However, I like GT Legends even better.

It's basically the same game engine, with current tracks, but with 70s cars. So you can drive a Mini Cooper, Ford Mustang, Lotus Europa, Corvette Stingray, Ford GT40... car pr0n basically. :D Plus I like the handling of those old cars better; most of them like to keep going straight when you head into a corner (big tendency to understeer) then after you tame the understeer and the front end finally digs in, the car tries to kill you with massive fishtailing! It's a fun, fun challenge :D! That's the complete opposite of the GTR2 racing cars which are very precise, accurate and efficient, with perfect weight transfer. I guess I enjoy crappy cars!

Last year the developers at Simbin released a game entitled GTR FIA Racing and it was one of the better simulation racing games on the PC. This year they have pulled out all of the stops with their latest game GTR 2 to create on of the best racing games on any system. Read on to find out more.

I've been playing the series since the original GTR. I too keep all three on my hard drive. The original GTR was a bit more 'slippery' and braking into turns was really a challenge. GTL is just great with the selection of cars. And GTR2 is great and more refined, and the multiplayer is way better than that of the original GTR. There should still be plenty of active games to play, but I usually find it best to find a group of people with at least some structure of a racing league to join if you're looking at doing it often as it adds a lot more to the game.
Also, I'll toss out a plug for TrackIR, I bought it after getting into sim racing (plus I also use flight sims), and I haven't regretted anything other than waiting so long to get it. It adds so much more being able to look into the apex of a corner or looking at a mirror or over your shoulder. If you really get into GTR and the like, I can't recommend TrackIR enough and personally for me it would be like driving without a wheel now.

Edit: Also I got so excited I forgot to mention that the next in the series, GTR Evolution, is set to release on September 30th. This one will ship with Nürburgring in it, although you can find some very nicely done versions of it for GTR2 ect. Also there are plenty of sound mods that are worth looking into.

I'd need a new computer/monitor/G25 to get into GTR2. But out of great curiosity, what is TrackIR? Something you wear that moves your view when you move your head or something?

Yup. I use the TrackIR4 Pro with the TrackClip Pro, so I have a thing that clips onto my head phones and then the sensor on my monitor. It may seem like a weird at first since you need to look at your screen, but once you use it a bit it's very natural. The software for it is very customizable as well, so you can tweak the curves for real head movement vs in-game movement to whatever works best for you.

Hrm, interesting, although in the end I'd prefer a good multi-monitor setup, but I assume the TrackIR option is alot cheaper!
