why bother with obselete technology.

So is the wheel, but we use it everyday. :)

Sure but how will the person who buys a GTO today feel when in a months time games that run best on cards that support Pixel Shader 3.0 are released, and their cheap and nasty GTO's won't run them in the quality they were intended to be played?

Probably not so bad considering how much shader 3 is based on pure hype and marketing.

oh and selling failed 480's with PS2.0 as a new video card isn't hype and lies?

ps 3.0 is not hype. Run Far Cry with the newest ps 3.0 patch. Run AOE III on a ps 2.0 then on a ps 3.0 card and tell me you see no difference.

I do see a diference - the x850 runs Farcry, and Chaos Theory faster in SM2 than a 6800U runs them with SM3. Now if you want to talk about features, then turn on HDR in a 6800U and tell me how you like gaming at 10x7 w/o AA.

If SM3 is that important, then everyone should be jumping the gun on the r520, since it runs it best, and you can use AA with HDR. But even at this point, no card comes even close to beating a modded gto2 for that price, so for someone with a gf FX, it would be a HUGE upgrade, and the gto2 is not defective, they just locked the pipes to get rid of the inventory faster.

GTO2 is a very good deal,
but i wonder how long it can last, arent ATI just getting rid of excess x850 to make way for r520 gpus?

I think that's why the 520's are delayed.

ATI getting rid of obselete stock now, clearly they have lot of it. Once the 520's are released who's going to buy a card based on 480 technology?

Actually who do people pay full price now on cards based on 480 technology anway? LOL

Apparently a lot of people find this to be a very good deal.

Made up my mind to get a GTO2 and Mod it since this GF 5750 card i have is crap (got it just so I would have video for my new build) and now that I want to get it, THEY ARE ALL SOLD OUT!

Maybe you need to do a bit more research on the subject. $200 is hardly "full price" for a card with this much power and SM3.0 is still pretty much a non-issue for the majority of current games.

It's not out of stock anymore . . . instead it's now $299 on Newegg . . . I guess they found out it was basically an X850XT . . . ;) (probably cheaper elsewhere, but no longer $199)

"This much power" is relative. X850XT is hardly a champion these days.

With 7800GT prices falling (and likely to fall more soon) you're better off spending another $100 on a next generation card. IMHO, of course.

They did the same thing with the A64 X2 3800+. I bought it from ZZF for $75 than Newegg wanted for it. I'll agree, I'm pissed. $100 is a big price jump in a week.

I'll believe $300 7800GT's soon when I see it. It's true that the X850XT isn't a champion anymore, but for the price (if you can get it now without paying thru the nose *cough*Newegg*cough*), you'll be hard pressed to find a better card.

I went back to Nvidia on my 6600GT (replaced a dead 9800 Pro) and I wasn't impressed. I think they lost their edge on driver support.

I was comparing the power as "relative" to the pricetag. The X850XT isn't champion anymore, but it isn't far from the top of the video card hierarchy. And just over $200 for the fourth fastest card currently available is a bargain in my eyes.

The GTO2s are just surplus R480 chips that ATI needs to dump fast into the midrange market as not many people will be buying X850s when the new X1xxx's are out.

Allstarshop.com has OEM, Lite Retail and Full Retail of the X800GTO2 in stock (havent noticed them OOS yet -- and they ship very fast... I had a tracking number within the hour, as did Diogenes2. My cards get here on monday :)

Page computers suck. If Kris the editor says AT doesn't use them then why should you.
People having to wait nearly 2 weeks for their order...
