GTFO, Curt Schilling!

...and take your useless company with you

Schilling's 38 Studios mulls move out of Mass.

Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling said he would love to keep his video-game company in Massachusetts, but if other states are willing to play ball with him on tax incentives, he might move.

Schilling said he has held talks with Rhode Island officials about relocating Maynard-based 38 Studios LCC to the Ocean State.

"We're in preliminary discussions around all of that right now," said Schilling.

And not just with Rhode Island. Schilling said that he's been talking to several other states that are interested in his growing company. The former ace wouldn't identify the other states, but said they're eager to attract the company he started four years ago.

"We have all the things any state in the country would want right now," Schilling said. "We're hearing from states that don't have programs talking about putting programs in place for us."

Schilling said he plans to hire several hundred people over the next few years.

"They're very high paying jobs, around $85,000 a year, they're permanent jobs and the industry is growing," he said.

38 Studios currently has no products. Copernicus is an MMO in development, which nobody will buy. their previous product was a WoW newsletter. woooo hoooo! all that in only 4 years! the "hire several hundred people" part is standard-issue bullshit for companies begging for tax breaks, and at $85k each, is pure imagination.

fwiw, i stopped liking him when he tried to flex some political muscle a few years ago. now he's just another multi-millionaire looking for a handout. hey, dickhead, feel free to ride the pine while pocketing private money, not my tax dollars.

if he hires 1 person, then he'll create more jobs than Obama.

😛

Wut? Reading comprehension fails again.

A four year start-up that has already licensed a deal with EA to publish their first game. He's seeking tax breaks to grow the company. Like a lot of the idiot responses to the article in Boston.com, everyone thinks he plans on moving. Why would he move from Medfield if he moves the company to RI?

As his company grows and he hires, all of those jobs and revenue that will come from his first game being published will go into the RI tax coffers. MA offers tax breaks to Biotech and the movie industry but not to Software companies, you wonder why so many are located elsewhere.

Kind of funny, people loved him when he came to Boston and helped the Red Sox win a World Series. His wife and himself perform endless amounts of local charity work. But b/c of his politics, everyone hates him now.

Okay I'm going to shoot some shotgun sized bullets in your response.

1) A significant majority of boutique software development companies are TINY. Several hundred is a vast overstatement.

2) People never loved Kurt Schilling, ANYWHERE. I am not a fan of any baseball team, but Curt Schilling's reputation as a giant cock sucker is legendary, even amongst sports fans who don't follow baseball.

1) DICE is a developer for EA and has several hundred developers. If that's tiny, it's still hundreds of jobs leaving the state.

2) Yet, he was loved while he pitched in Boston. Okay, thanks for playing!

1. Congratulations, you've named ONE. Most game developers are much smaller.

2. Yes, he was loved as a piched, by people from Bostons, when he was helping them win. It doesn't change the fact the rest of the world didn't like him.

1. ??? There are a number of Biotech start-ups with less than 20 people. Heck there's one a block away from me with only 10 people, yet MA provides them with tax breaks. So, you're point is that start-ups shouldn't get any kind of tax breaks so feel free to go elsewhere but come back when you get larger?

2. Yes, I'm sure Arizona and Philadelphia didn't like him either.

How do you spell the man's name differently in consecutive sentences? Unless Kurt Schilling is someone that we don't know about and isn't actually the former pitcher.

Companies do move to where it can help them be successful. It's nothing new.

As for 38Studios they did strike a deal with EA to develop a single-player RPG and have "seasoned development talent" from Bethesda, LucasArts, and other studios as well as creative help from Todd McFarlane and R.A. Salvatore.

He may be a jackass but he is completely within his rights to find a place where his business can be successful.

OT: I'm not much of a Baseball guy, but I heard Shilling on The DP show last week and he's an awesome interview. I kind of like the guy.

As for the OP, he said they already have a deal signed with EA and if he can save/make more money for his company by moving it, well that's Business 101 and I can't blame the guy.

Wait wait, stop the presses! A business owner is considering moving the business to an environment that is more conductive to growing the business?! Oh my, what is the world coming to!

Does that matter? EA is going to publish his game, which means they will be employing people. Even if it's just 1, that's 1 more than 0, which means MA would be better off having the company there.

where the hell is my tax break? MA would be better off not taxing the living shit out of residents. guitar hero / rock band came from the next town over, and they succeeded without the tax breaks schilling wants.

Wait....you are biching about a guy moving his company to a different state? How bout you go give crap to all the companies who move their business to other countries like India. At least Schilling is keeping the money and jobs in house as opposed to giving jobs other countries that could be had by the 15% of people in this country who are jobless.

This just sounds like you are moaning cause you don't like the guy.

i'm bitching about someone with tons o' cash in pocket, that hasn't produced anything in 4 years, angling for tax breaks while i get clobbered by the tax man left and right. he can move his operation to mississippi, cambodia or zimbabwe for all i care. until i have a family, the only existence i want to subsidize is my own.

Sounds like you both need a tax cut, the only difference is he's in a position to do something about it. I can see where you would be angry but I think you're misdirecting that anger to him instead of the real problem - the government that's taxing both of you.
