GTAIV locking up during gameplay

I searched the Internets on this and found roughly 942 trillion hits, but they were all about the PS3 version during the opening cutscene. My problem is on the 360.

When playing the game, it will simply lock up during gameplay. I get out of it by rebooting the 360. There's NO rhyme or reason to how it happens. Sometimes it'll be after several hours of playing, sometimes after only a few minutes.

I've tried two seperate GTAIV disks and both exhibit the same problem. I'm using a new Jasper 360, with a hard drive. Any suggestions?

I'd start from there, see if that fixes the problem.

Are you already playing the game from the hard drive? Might wanna try clearing your cache.

I have a jasper arcade and GTAIV doesn't lock during regular play but has sat on the loading screen indefinitely a few times while exiting a multiplayer game.

Do you have any airflow problems; is it too hot or sitting on or near another piece of stereo equipment?

No airflow problems, it's in a metal rack with airflow all around it. I haven't tried installing it to the hard drive yet, I'll try that next. Thanks.

Any update?

Installing to the hard drive appears to have fixed the problem, no lockups in several days since. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm concerned this means something is wrong with my DVD drive, but this is the only game I've ever seen have an issue. I guess I'll just have to hope it's a weird one-off.
