I am still in the first part of the city (only been playing for about 2 days). Anyway, my in-game pager had a message about being able to buy better cars, but I missed where the place was that I have to go to buy them at. Can I get directions? Preferably directions from either: Jesse's, Salvator's, Tony's, Luigi's, or the garage. I want one to do the "Turisimo" (sic) mission. Oh, any tips on the Turisimo mission would be helpful.

I agree, wait until you complete the Sal missions and you will have a chance to pick up any car you want from right across the bridge...then you can go back and do those "El Burro" missions with whatever car you have.

Honestly, having a fast car is not as important as you might think. Sure the banshee is fast, but many people have issues with its handling. You could complete the mission even with a ranger or Humvee. If you don't want to wait until the next city, I would suggest the Mafia Sentinal. You can pick up one of those at Sal's place or you can find one parked in an alley above Tony's (that is if you don't want to jack one). They have good speed, can handle being banged up pretty well, and are not that shabby on handling. If you could manage it, you could also use a Cop Car. Same goes for it. Speed, Handling, ect. Sometimes the ones at the station are unlocked and you can just nab one of those.

As for tips, Handling is everything. Keep control of your car. Even if you get stuck in 2nd or 3rd place...don't worry. Be consistant and traffic will hold up the cheetas. :D Also, don't floor it at the starting line where you turn left. Hold up a bit then blow through when they all smash into each other at the light. 9 times out of 10, you will spring into first right then.

Hope this helps.

Unless there's something different in the PC version from the PS2, I don't think you can buy a car in the game (that's why it's called Grand Theft Auto). For the Turismo mission I used the Banshee from the dealership in St. Mark's, since it has the best acceleration off the line. If you can get ahead of them on the first turn, you're golden as long as you don't screw up. Don't expect to win on any of you first few tries - it takes a few tries to know the path to take so you know where to start turning. And one more hint - try doing the mission before you do the final mission on Portland - once you kill Salvatore you'll have a tough time getting through St. Mark's without them trying to kill you at every turn, blowing up your car with shotguns.

I had good luck with Turismo by starting out shooting my Uzi out the window at my competitors - never neglect violence as a solution!

Good luck is right - your competitors are in bulletproofs cheetahs. :D In fact, I've read that if you wait at the end of the race you're supposed to be able to get one of the cheetahs by pushing it with your car into your garage then saving your game (the cars are locked you you can't get in and drive). I've never found a way to do this since all the cars seem to drive away after the race.

The cheetahs are bulletproof, but you can get one pretty easily. At just over 100 seconds (if memory serves) they'll come rushing by your hideout, going the wrong direction. If you block the road with a tour bus, angled, to push a cheetah into the ramp of your garage, you can get a bulletproof/explosionproof/flameproof cheetah just about every time.

Being particularly cheap, I decided to beat that mission with my (legit) tank. You can get infinite tanks after you've beaten the storyline of the game, or if you complete Emergency Vehicle Pickup.

I should note that there is an easy way and a hard way to get all the emergency vehicles. The FBI car and the tank are, of course, the hardest.

Both cars require a *lot* of work; you'll need a rocket launcher (ideally; it'll make things so much easier) and a bunch of police bribes.

If you're stuck in getting a legit tank/fbi car, PM me and I'll help you out though don't bother before you have 100 packages and 5-6 police bribes :)

I just finished the "Salvatore Calls a Meeting" mission. How many more do I have before I move on to Staunton Island?

Another question: when you move form one part to the next, does the other part of the city get locked? If I progress to Staunton Island, will I still be able to drive over to portland?

That's a great idea...so when you finish the race the car is in your hideout....cool  Which direction do they travel towards the hideout, north or south? I can't remember, it's been a while since I've played that Turismo mission. Yeah, tank would be a good slution to beat that race - you're not going to set any records, but it'll make it easier. (rather a cheap win, though ;))

Yes, you can still drive to Portland - the Callahan Bridge will open up once you finish in Portland. Actually the first Staunton Island mission requires you to go back to Portland. I don't recall the mission names well enough to answer the first part of your question, but I am sure that one of the many GTA3 sites can provide a complete list of the missions, in order.

It takes a total of about 20 missions to get to the 2nd island. And I tried doing Turismo in a tank via blowing up the compeitors before the race, the game says I lost (it's a sore loser) :D

After "Salvatore Calls a Meeting", you have "Triads and Tribulations", "Blow Fish!", "Chaperone", "Cutting the Grass", "Bomb Da Base (Parts I & II)", and "Last Requests". So, 6 more missions to go before you get to Staunton Island, which you get to in the last mission, "Last Requests."

Second question's answer: No, you can go from island to island. In fact, one of the side quests on the last island requires you to go back to Portland to finish the mission.

I used a Humvee to win Turismo... realize that you don't have to lineup beside the cars to start... just take a two block run at them in your Humvee and ram them - the race will start automatically... and if you're lucky, you'll knock over a couple of the cars (taking them out of the race).

I found the easiest car to win that race in is the cop car. It is not only fast, but handles much better than the viper (banshee) and takes a more wicked beating.

GAHHHHH!!! Ive passed the Chaperone mission at least 4 times but as soon as I drop Maria at Salvatore's house, the game freezes and I have to ctrlaltdel it. Damnit, I thought it wasnt gonna give me any more problems after I spent 3 days trying to fix the damn thing.

This pisses me off. Im gonna go write my Congressman

:|

...or at least write to Rockstar support :p

i found the best car to use in 'turismo' was the hummer (patriot). strong, sturday, keeps up with the cheetahs, and all you gotta do is drive and let them crash into stuff themselves. beat it the first time i tried with the hummer. all the other cars didn't handle well enough.

The secret with the tank is to turn your gun around and fire for speed. If you aim on a course slightly left of dead ahead, then you can be to the left of the cheetahs when they make the turn and whomp them good (running into them kills them; shooting them does nothing). Or if you'd like, push one to your garage and when it's restored, you'll have your everything-but-crashing-and-flipping-proof cheetah.

I had to do this because I had advanced to island two, stupidly, and certain groups which will remain nameless but its members retain shotguns are angry with you.

This game sounds so interesting, judging from all the comments and pics I've seen. NFS PU is the only other game I play besides NHL hockey 2002. What's the learning curve on GTA3? How complex are the controls for this game? I'm so wanting to play this game, alas short on cash, DOH! Anybody know if there's a demo version out for the PC yet?

What kind of PC power does one need to play this game w/o choking? I have a P3 1Ghz with a Voodoo5 5500 running W2K, would that be a good qualification for the game? Thx.

Learning curve - basically none. If you can press a key to go foward, back, shoot people, get in a car, you know GTA3 :D Controls - see previous sentence. Demo version - think there is - see OFFICIAL GTA3 thread for the demo I think. I'm running a C850 with a G2GTS - it has its slowdowns but runs well other than that. Your system should have no problem

Make sure that it's compatible with the DirectX version that GTA3 requires.
