Hi

I was thinking of picking up GTAIV, how well will I be able to run it on high settings on a system like this

Phenom x3 720BE (stock)
Asus M4A77TD Pro
4GB DDR3-1333 (XMS3)
HD4870 1GB

I hear people say you NEED a quad, is that true?

It's probably worth trying - I doubt a quad will give that much of a performance boost over a triple. My brother's computer with a Q6600 and a 4850 runs the game fine.

I picked it up last night when it had finally dropped to $20 at Target. All I can say is I'm glad I didn't pay more. In addition to installing SecuROM, the game requires that you install Games for Windows - LIVE and Rockstar Social Club, and sign on in order to save your progress at all. If you aren't logged in you can't save. Beyond that, it's probably the worst looking game I've seen in five years. In fact it has the distinction of being exceeded in graphical ugliness only by it's GTA predecessors. I really can't remember seeing so many jagged, pixelated edges since the 90's ended.

I just started last night, so I can't speak much to the gameplay yet, but it seems identical to the earlier versions. I have no doubt your system will run it well, since it is doing none of the GPU-intensive stuff that makes rendered images look better (except bloom lighting, which is splashed all over everything to such an extent that I sometimes think an atomic weapon has gone off behind me).

Seriously, if you can get it for free, it might be worth the cost.

My rig with a Q8200 and 512MB 9800GT runs the game perfectly fine with medium texture settings. If you have a 1GB card, you should be able to run high. I don't think one extra core would make THAT big of a difference.

Thanks for the heads up on that Mark! Those little 'extras' required by GTAIV certainly poisen the well for me, destroying what interest I had in the title. Until the hacks to boot that stuff come out, at the least. And the price goes way down.

The truth is it's still fun to play. I felt the same way about the first two (I didn't play 3), ugly, clunky, but still fun. Signing up for both the Social Club and Games for Windows Live was a pain in the ass, though, and having to do that in order to save just yanks my chain.

You don't "need" a Quad core CPU to run and play GTAIV, I've played with my system and it ran fine.
