There were some PC issues, yes. The later patches definitely helped a lot. I went from barely able to playing it on a X2 3800+ and 3870 to it running fine with high settings.

It's your typical poor console to PC port. The game likes multi core processors (2+).

You can set up your saves with an offline account, but it is a bunch of twaddle. If I had known it was GFWL, I wouldn't have gotten it on the Steam sale, regardless of the price. Only did the intro stuff, as I have other games on tap first, but it did have a pretty good set up in the 'tutorial' part.

Thanks OP.
Already have the game on steam, but bought one anyway. Being a huge fan of GTA and wanting to give Rockstar the money to develop more awesome games, I bend over and take the Securom crap.

it's an AWESOME game, if you don't have any issues running it

it took me a few weeks to tweak my computer to run w/out crashing

I paid $50 for it when I came out, and it's been well worth it. I still play it fairly regularly. I suggest that you crack the game if you do buy it though, as you can remove some of the annoying stuff like Live and Rockstar Social Club.

Ah yes... let thecrackers antiDRM folks make life eaiser for paying customers. Pathetic but true. 🙁

another game that is going to require MS live account is bioshock 2.

Can I play this game without an Internet connection. I like to take my laptop to work and play pc games but some games want to have Internet access even after installing it at home with Internet access.

I love being a one man crime wave! But it takes some power to run at 1920 x 1080 on the PC. I have a Q6600 at 3.2 Ghz and a XFX 5870 and still can't turn up all the eye candy.Yes the Social Club and Live stuff suck, but I still enjoy the game.

If you have a quad core it's good. Recently upgraded to a quad core and it runs real well. But, if you're not using an exceptionally fast/overclocked dual core, don't buy it.

Yes, you can either play in offline mode with Live, or crack the game. Cracking the game is probably less of a hassle IMO.

I'm going to get it. I built a new system back in September and will wonder how it will run.

E8400, 4.0ghz
4gb ram
Geforce GTX 260

Poorly. You've got a dual core. Sell your Mobo and Cpu and upgrade to a quad. Fry's has the Ph2 965 + Mobo for $180

Actually, E8400's at 4Ghz ran it OKAY if I recall. But still, it won't run anywhere near as well as on a quad core. I upgraded to a quad core from my E2200 running at 3Ghz (which ran most games just fine) and there has been an enormous performance increase.

It might seem stupid to upgrade to a quad core to play GTA IV, but in reality, quad core adoption has gone up a lot recently (if you look at the Steam hardware survey trends, it at 25% or so now). Additionally, PC ports aren't nearly as well optimized as they should be, so quad cores are becoming more and more useful. Well produced PC games are becoming more multithreaded now too.

Of course this game CAN run smoothly at low settings but PC gamers buy the expensive hardware to turn up the eye candy. Also, people might think something runs smooth at 20fps while others hate anything below 60.

I think the main problem with this game is going to be shadows? Correct me if I'm wrong? Rockstar used the SPE's on the cell for shadow computation. Instead of having 6 available threads for it we've only got 4 on our quad core systems.

My bet would be turning shadows off helps immensely.

Medium settings on PC could be better than console 720p.

As for FPS, for GTA games 30 is enough. In fact, frame limiter limited FPS to 30 in GTA San Andreas...

Seems to be a lot of different views regarding the CPU for GTA4.

I'm only interested in getting decent framerates with medium settings at medium resolutions. Does a high-end E8400 (@ 3.9ghz) really not cut it for the game? The E8400 at 3.9Ghz is paired with a 4890.
