Just use vista or SP3. There is a damn good reason why it won't work, and that is because it is not made for Windows 7. The installer automatically says, "Not going to install" if you use anything but Windows XP SP3 or Vista SP1.

Hopefully its a beta thing. I cant see Win7 making it if it wont allow recent games to be installed.

hmm, try to get into the dvd and run the setup file in Vista compatibility mode. Worth a shot.

But you're not installing a game, you're installing a giant pile of bugs that used to be a game for the console systems. I've heard one too many problems regarding PC GTA4...

GTA4 is the exception, not the norm, for Windows 7 game compatibility even in beta

Like Mikey said above, try the compatibility wizard. I was having trouble installing Samurize in Windows 7 at first, but after right-clicking on the executable, I selected the option that said something about compatibility. It asks you questions and walks you through some steps, after which it installed just fine. Pile of bugs it may be, but you should be able to install GTA IV in an OS that uses Vista as its foundation...

No, compatability mode did not work, tried vista and xpsp2 for the installer.
Footballrunner: could you elaborate how you did it so i can make sure i did what you did. i used compatablity with installer..is that wrong method?

Post was simple, here is my question: "has anyone managed to get it working in W7?"

i didnt ask why does it not work did i? The game specs and even the installer gave me the answer to that didnt it? ...yes it did. There is nothing wrong with checking to see if someone found a way around it.please read posts next time

I read the post... I simply find it amazing that someone would complain about a game not working in a beta OS (should be obvious) and doesn't know how to Google the answer to their question (should be easy).

No irony here... just a bunch of assumption on your part.

Even then the compatibility is sketchy at best. I'm on Vista SP1 and the launcher program (RGSC) keeps telling me I need to have SP3 before it will work. The only way I can start the game is to run the program directly, without the launcher.

EVE wasn't made for Windows 7, yet here I am playing it.

Some will... some won't. The point is, if it's not designed for Windows 7, there's a chance it's not gonna work.

sorry edited my post. You have to run it in win 2000 compatibility mode (weird i know). You only have to do it to the setup.exe in the gtavi folder. Then you have to update games for windows app cause it woudn't run with out the updated version.

again you can't read. Did i complain? show me. cause it looks like a question to me.
Did i say i expected the game to work in a beta OS? dont know till you try, if not ask if solution is available, right?
Did i google? i didnt say, rather you assumed. But to answer yes i have and not alot of useful info came up, probably cause not many have really tried yet.

see, sir, your not reading, rather overlooking and assuming. maybe you look for someone you can flame?

Many computer users are used to finding a way around a problem. Linux users found a way around PC compatability, its called Wine and thousands of questions about that are on here and other forums. is it wrong?

So you saying that its wrong of me to ask if anyone found a way around a problem??
should i try hunting down all your posts to make sure your not a hypocrite? i wouldnt waste my time but you have no purpose of being helpful, you just want to argue.

I wonder if this would be a problem with the steam verson of the game. I actually upgraded from Vista to 7 for the hell of it and the game ran fine. Ended up blasting that and reinstalling windows but still. . .

Go for it, child... you'll be sorely disappointed. If I'm going to ask someone for help, it's not likely going to be on an Internet forum. :D

I dunno, a software forum on a tech-oriented website seems to be a great place to ask a tech-oriented software-related question. /shrug

ah, someone on another forum got for me working solution, so i'll post here for someone else. thanks to those that actually tried to help.

1.Copy all files from DVD_1 to your HDD.
2.Set "compatibility whit Vista" for the *.exe files.
3.Install from HDD.
4.Set "compatibility whit Windows 2000" for Grand Theft Auto IV.exe.
5. Play
apparantly copying the dvd to drive before setting compatability to setup is key.

mm, no not dissapointed at all since its thanks to forums like this i have solved many Computer issue's over the years and now this one...but no thanks to you, You and your sibbling rather flame, insult others and had no intention of helping apparantly. Even if i didnt find solution, i wouldnt be dissapointed cause at least i tried and then could move on

so your not here to ask for help nor give help..... yet i'm the child?...so what is the point of you being a member here? nevermind, dont answer, i think i already know.

You miss the point. He asked if he should hunt down all my posts and see whether I'm a hypocrite. I merely say that **I** (not you, not he) don't need to use an Internet forum to get help for tech-related questions.

well, a few things. trey. your a tard. i had to sign up just to tell you how utterly stupid you are. windows 7 has no problems, and like vista, if you have more than a single core processor it runs much better than xp. but unlike vista, windows 7 runs well on single cores too. like my gf's acer netbook (atom 1.6ghz and 1gb ram) as for gta4, make sure you have updated .net framework 2.0 (not 3, 3 comes with vista/w7) and have installed visual c++ redist (2005, 2008 and sp1 releases, 64bit too if your using 64bit w7). next go into the GTAIV folder on the dvd and set compatibility mode of the setup to windows xp (not 2000, not vista). run the setup. when you install the game, dont use compat modes otherwise it will look for sp3 on xp or sp1 on vista. its almost finished installing for me now and ill post again to let you know of anything else that needs fixing when its done. on a side note. trey: stop being a douche, he asked a question, not why you hate windows 7, haven't used it and think he's retarded. also, a beta os is there to be tested, why should he not expect something released in the past month to support the operating system that will be in major use in the next few years?
