GTA 4 weird water graphics

Something is wrong with my water in GTA 4. it happens a lot, but when i change any of the settings or alt-tab the game, the water becomes normal for a while and then it starts going wrong again.

Does the game start to feel laggy for you while this happens? Perhaps this is your video card having trouble or getting too hot.

no lag at all, the water just look weird after a while, everything else are totally fine and the game is 100% playable, its just that everytime i want to look at the beautiful scenary, the water screws up which ruins the wonderful view of liberty city

What graphics card do you have? Do you have the newest drivers for it? Are you running the newest DirectX binaries? If you're under Vista or Windows 7, did you install the DX9 binaries? Are you running the newest version of GTA IV? Does it have any patches at all?

Thank you so much for your time. i have a 4870 1GB running with vista , ya i have the newest driver and patches for everything including the game, but i dont think thats the problem cuz i had a 8800GT running in XP in the same rig before but it had the same probelm. hmm i can try to give you more detail............ I have a legit copy of GTA4 for PC, and my gaming PC specs are E8500 3.16GHz, ATI 4870 1GB, 4gb of ram, running vista Ultimate 32 bit Service pack 2, every other games(Crysis, Crysis warhead, assassin's creed, RE5, Batman Arkham .etc) works totally fine with my machine. GTA 4 works perfectly fine with my PC as well execpt for the water part. please tell me if u need more, thx

Just looked at water on my Xbox and it looks like on your second screenshot. The first one does look weird. A boat just passed on the water and didn't leave such things behind it so that's not it either (it did influence the water correctly - not like this).

What details are you running the game at? Did you try to play a bit with the sliders? Can you also go into your Catalyst Control Center and check how is Catalyst A.I. set (in 3D options)? Try both options there. Perhaps some funky optimizations are at play here?
