I'm thinking of picking up GTA3 for pc. Only thing is, I've only played it on my friends PS2, and I have a hard time imagining driving around with the mouse.

Are people mostly just using mouse/KB for the PC game, or some other controller? Does the mouse work OK for driving? I've used the mouse a bit in other driving games and hated it, but what about this one?

Probably either the keyboard or a gamepad would be better than using a mouse.
It's played on the PS2 with a gamepad so I would probably try to get one similar to that, like the Gravis Pro, or just get a standard MS Sidewinder which is pretty cheap.

I plaed it using a cheap 8 dollar gravis pad which is an exact replica of a PS2 controller, except it isnt analog. and it worked great. you can pick them up at EB and i have never had a problem with it

I used a gamepad to drive around, and the keyboard and mouse when walking.

I used a Graxis Eliminator Aftershock pad.

Just plugged into my usb port & WinXp, detected it with no need to install any drivers.
(i had all XP updates installed 1st from Microshaft autoupdate)

Then in GTA3 I set the controls to CLASSIC & the game controlled just as well as my PS2 version, with pretty much the same button config too.
(analog to steer, buttons for gas, brake, in/out of car etc..)
Only time i used the mouse was to use my sniper rifles which was miles better than trying to aim with a controller.

Of course, i got to run the game at 1600x1200 on my pc, lets see my Ps2 do that. LOL ;)

Standard WASD+mouse for on foot and the default keys for driving. Had no problem with it that way.

keyboard is just dandy for driving... you only use the mouse outside of the car to aim and look around (something i could NEVER do with my gravis)

I never got used to playing GTA3 using the keyboard and mouse... it just feels weird to me...

Now I am using MS Sidewinder Pro gamepad, feels much better... But for aiming (like when firing a weapon), nothing beats using the mouse...

I use az/arrow keys when driving a car (like all poor sods should when using a driving game with no wheel) and arrow keys/mouse for walking around. It means a bit of moving of the arms when I get in/out of cars, but I feel its a nice way to control the game, using my normal driving controls for driving, and Max Payne/FPS controls when on foot.
