[GSMArena] LG "developing high-end SoCs of their own".

Is Qualcomm's glory days as the top Android SoC provider now officially finished?

  • It's done.

  • Wait for them to release their Krait custom SoC, S810 isn't Krait.

  • Only large companies like Samsung/LG will do this. Most other can't.

  • Other(write what)

LG's forays into the SoC space isn't new. They had their LG Odin, which was a run of the mill Cortex A15 SoC.
But now Korean media, via GSMArena, are telling us that LG is going for the high-end. (A15 just wasn't high-end by H2 2014).

It would go into mass production this year but presumably we wouldn't see it in a device until 2016.

LG's high-end SoC is rumored to be the new A72, with the high-end Mali-T880 as the GPU. It would be one of the very first implementations of that design, perhaps the first of them all.

With Samsung's recent renewed efforts on the high-end of the SoC market and now LG coming out of the gate, it sure looks like Qualcomm's undisputed place at the Andorid top-end is coming to an end, a position they held for many years. I don't mourn. I hope that will spur them to get their act together, after the mediocre S810.

P.S

Just in case you missed it, here's Anandtech's rundown of the A72.

Wow, I didn't know/had forgotten LG made chips.

Interesting. I think they'd be better off buying the SoCs from someone else, though. The market's pretty saturated.

I chose "other" in the poll: Qualcomm's "golden age" has come to and end, for certain, but they're far from being out of the game. They're temporarily less competitive, and that will change eventually.

Of course they are. Everyone's going to try to play chip designer, then after a while it will become apparent that it makes no financial sense and most will shutter their efforts.

Seems like a foolish endeavor considering LG's modest profits and lack of any real experience doing any such thing. I think LG and HTC are both envying Samsung's position as the only android SoC maker to be able to make its own chips in light of S810's issues...

What about Huawei? Not sure when they will announce a 64 bit variant of the Kirin.

Qualcomm needs to wake up as soon as possible... A57 and A72 are bringing the phone CPUs to a new level. Plus Intel march to the mobile could end Qualcomm glory days.
