LG's forays into the SoC space isn't new. They had their LG Odin, which was a run of the mill Cortex A15 SoC.
But now Korean media, via GSMArena, are telling us that LG is going for the high-end. (A15 just wasn't high-end by H2 2014).
It would go into mass production this year but presumably we wouldn't see it in a device until 2016.
LG's high-end SoC is rumored to be the new A72, with the high-end Mali-T880 as the GPU. It would be one of the very first implementations of that design, perhaps the first of them all.
With Samsung's recent renewed efforts on the high-end of the SoC market and now LG coming out of the gate, it sure looks like Qualcomm's undisputed place at the Andorid top-end is coming to an end, a position they held for many years. I don't mourn. I hope that will spur them to get their act together, after the mediocre S810.
P.S
Just in case you missed it, here's Anandtech's rundown of the A72.
