This is probably old news to most of you, but I just found out. AT&T is offering Motorola T720 (a kick ass phone) which works only on GSM networks. The only problem is the coverage. My town is covered, but if you look on the coverage map - there's a huge grey area around it. So I'm gonna lose a connection every time I get 10 minutes away from my house. From the map, it looks like only major metro areas have sufficient coverage. Wondering how long until GSM becomes an option for us suburban folks.

Dude...GSM has been here for YEARS! AT&T and Cingular both use GSM within their networks.

EDIT: Does the U.S. unit of T-Mobile also use GSM??

But this is the first time AT&T is openly selling GSM only phone. At least that I know off. And they didn't carry GSM plans before.

Yesh... they do. Still not too many Bluetooth + GSM phones yet. Heck, GSM is fairly useless in my area. It's still mostly TDMA/CDMA/PCS. The T720 isn't that great of a phone either. Battery life and reception isn't that great.

AT&T has had GSM since October. Old hat.

In other news, man landed on the moon.

I've had AT&T GSM for 3 months now. I started with the Sony/Ericcson t68i, and now I have the Motorola t720. It's a good phone, but it feels a little flimsy. And, the software crashes from time to time.

I have the t720 from verizon also. I love the looks of the phone but the damn thing will "lock up" once or so a week. Its so damn annoying, you have to take out your battery and put it back it to "reset" it. GGRRRRR..... does anyone happen to know if there is an update for this phone to fix it?

The CDMA version is known to have poor battery life. The GSM version gets pretty good battery life IMO.

Much better? Hrmm... you get MMS and the option to use a little camera (at the cost of memory available for Java MIDlets, etc). I have the T720, and even then (without the camera app) I'd prefer more memory.

The 720i has a better battery as well, and some say it crashes less.

You are right and wrong depending on how one looks at your statement.

The USA works at 1900Mhz GSM freq, while the rest of the world works at 900 and 1800. So if you want your phone to work all over the world then a tri band phone would be perfect. However, if you meant that best coverage was for use within the US then a tri band phone is useless unless u plan on going abroad to use a GSM mobile service there.
