grub - raid1 - drive replacement?

Hi 'nixers,

Several years ago I upgraded to a Raid1 array for my boot / root filesystem and installed grub as usual to the MBR. Works great.

Now the time has come to upgrade those drives to something better
(WD 1.5TB SATA). I know how, and have done Raid1 drive upgrades many times - slip in the new drive and just add the proper partition to the mdx array.

QUESTION:
But how do I install grub on the new drive's MBR? Manually run grub before I add the drive to the array, or is there another way. I always get nervous running grub. Is there anyway to check grub functionality on the new drive short of pulling the original drive?

Thanks for any help,
-joe
