Grrrrr... idiot Marines recruiter

Schools have to allow recruiters to set up shop & distribute information to students. My son happened to pass by the Marine recruiter's table a couple days ago & happened to strike up a conversation with the guy over a video he was showing. But, he informed the recruiter that no, he wasn't going to join the military, he was already accepted to college. Recruiter just talked to him, asked him questions about where he was going to go, etc.

Fast forward a day - recruiter returned to the school & had my son pulled from a studyhall to talk to him more. My son has been adamant that he's not interested. One of the other teachers was joking with me about it last night & told me that it would be funny if we told our son that the recruiter showed up at the door and told us he just needed our signatures to finalize everything - she witnessed my son's frustration in trying to get the guy to just take "no!" for an answer. The guy was relentless.

Fast forward to today. My son's adviser from the college he'll be attending called my wife to leave a for my son that if he wouldn't be able to graduate on time, because his spot was going to be filled by someone else & they wouldn't be able to start him during the spring semester. Thankfully we DID receive a call from someone at the college just to let him know.

The recruiter had called up my son's college and told them that my son had made other plans to serve in the military in the fall & wanted to delay his admission. Wife is freaking pissed (that's an understatement). My son was freaking out because that's all he's been very much looking forward to college & has raised his average and effort significantly in preparation. (the opposite of senioritis.) We had to contact a couple people at the college to get to the bottom of it - my son very nearly lost his enrollment because of this asshat. He didn't sign anything - not that it would matter; he's only 17 and they'd need our signature too.

We got lucky. Anyone have a clue who to contact so that this ass doesn't screw up some other student's plans?

cliffs:
*recruiter tries to recruit my son into the Marines
*son says 'NO!' (in no uncertain terms as witnessed by at least 1 teacher)
*recruiter calls the college my son was accepted at & tells them he won't be attending because he's going to join the Marines
*college believed the recruiter, but an adviser called just to make sure my son knew he'd lose his spot
*wife, son, and I are *pissed*

Wow, that's a bit over the top in my opinion. Glad everything seems to still be what your son had hoped for.

It seems your son was confronted with a life experience that may be helpful in college. Although the recruiter overstepped some boundaries, your kid is going to face many things in life. This will only help to make sure he is well adjusted.

Edit: Yea calling the school was extremely fucked up

Ask them who's in charge of their office or regionally, and complain up the ladder.
If that doesn't work, contacting local media and/or lawyer might be a (last) option.

OMG I love the military and served 10 years so I'm biased towards them haha but I'd be seriously boiling in anger if this happened to my son. I wonder if you can file an IG complaint.

What the fuck?!? How the hell can he call up a college and say 'uh so and so wants to delay admission... yeah you can trust me'? There has to be some flow of information that shouldn't be happening too.

I'm not sure who I would be more angry with, the college or the recruiter. That's a tough one.

I remember when I was in highschool I had a navy recruiter tell me that I was going to be nothing but a worthless gang banger if I didn't join the navy.. as if I had no other options in life..

.. but shit at least he didn't go through the trouble of actually jeopardizing my future.

edited to spare the United States Armed Services from the savagery of my demented sense of humor.

Figure out this guy's name and rank and contact the recruiting office and let them know what he did. I wouldn't go crazy trying to go after this guy, but you should at least try. He shouldn't be a recruiter if he's going to do this kind of bullshit.

This, but do not let it go. That recruiter should be in a court martial as he could have screwed up your son's future. Whatever you do, do not drop the issue and make sure you update us.

I'm fairly certain that they are in the military still. A friend of mine did Army recruitment when he got back from Iraq until he asked to be deployed again (don't ask -- I have weird friends) and he was still active military while doing it.

Recruiters tend to be a bunch of tools. I recall in the Army there were some recruiters who convinced female recruits their only way in was to have sex with the recruiters, which leaked out.

My former boss who was a former Colonel in the USMC remarked "people are stupid." :D

Wow, that blows my mind. You're lucky some calls were made. This guy needs to be fired before some other unsuspecting guy gets dropped from college enrollment.
